WICHITA FALLS, Texas – March 12, 2016 – The No. 2 seed Fort Lewis College men's basketball team held off a surging seventh seed Dallas Baptist University Saturday afternoon in the NCAA South Central Regional Quarterfinal Round, 95-87.
Saturday's win moves the Skyhawks (28-3 overall) winning streak to 16 games. It also marks the first time FLC has defeated a non-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team in the NCAA tournament. Fort Lewis improves to 4-8 all-time in the NCAA post-season.
The Skyhawks went on a 10-0 run in the first half while holding the Patriots scoreless for over five minutes. FLC grabbed their largest lead of the game, 22-7, at the 12:51 mark of the first half.
Fort Lewis headed into halftime with a 46-36 lead. The Skyhawks shot 63 percent in the first half from the floor (17-of-27) and 60 percent from long range (8-of-22).
DBU stormed back in the second half and went on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 51-51 with 15:02 left.
The Skyhawks trailed by five, 65-60, at the 10:34 mark.
Kody Salcido netted five points as the Skyhawks went on a 10-5 run to knot the game at 70.
Rasmus Bach hit two free throws and a three-point play by
Joshua Blaylock gave the Skyhawks a 77-76 lead they would not relinquish.
FLC closed the game out-scoring DBU, 12-5.
Blaylock led all scorers with 33 points. After starting the game making all six field goals, he finished the game making 11-of-15 field goals, 6-of-9 three-point field goals and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Cade Kloster added 10 points and three rebounds. Bach came off the bench to net 19 points, 11 of which came from the free throw line where he made all but one attempt. Bach added eight rebounds and three assists.
FLC finished the game shooting 54.5 percent from the floor (30-of-55), 36.4 percent from long range (8-of-22). The Skyhawks netted 27-of-31 free throws for 87.1 percent, attempting 17 more free throws than the Patriots.
The Skyhawks will face No. 3 seed Angelo State University on Sunday at 4 p.m. (MDT).
