Seventh Innings Decisive in Skyhawks Pod

DURANGO, Colo. – March 19, 2016 – Both of the Fort Lewis College softball games at Aspen Field on Saturday were decided in the seventh inning.  The Skyhawks defeated New Mexico Highlands University, 8-7, and fell to Colorado School of Mines, 7-3.  FLC is hosting the Cowgirls and Orediggers in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod.
 
Against the Orediggers, Missy Fundora tied the all-time hits record of 204, tying Chelsea Rodriguez' record.
 
The Skyhawks started game one with a run scored in the bottom of the second inning.  With two outs, Fundora hit a double to center field to score Gianna Melaragno for a 1-0 lead. Jeovanna Rios made the game 2-0 in the third inning when she drove home Angelique Elemen.
 
NMHU scored their first run in the fifth inning but FLC answered with three in the bottom of the inning for a 5-1 lead.  Rios singled to left field that scored Denae FisherMandy Owens added two more runs when she hit a single that brought home Lauren Caldwell and Rios.
 
The Cowgirls offense lit up in the final two innings as they scored three runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings.  FLC trailed NMHU 7-6 heading in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Owens drew a walk to reach first base and then advanced to second on Melaragno's single.  Fundora batted in the game winning runs on a single to left field that plated Melaragno and Owens for the 8-7 win.
 
Fundora went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in.  Fisher added two hits and two runs scored while Rios went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in and a run scored.
 
Foos earned the win in the circle after entering the game in relief in the seventh inning with bases loaded and no outs.
 
In game two, FLC held a 3-1 lead heading in the final inning but surrendered six runs on six hits to fall to Colorado School of Mines, 7-3. 
 
Fundora led the Skyhawks in game two with three hits, one run and one run batted in.  Caldwell added two hits and Owens went 2-for-3 with two runs and one run batted in.
 
Olivia Goldberg pitched the first 6.2 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits and seven strikeouts.
 
In the neutral site game between CSM and NMHU, the Orediggers defeated the Cowgirls, 12-4 in six innings.
 
The Skyhawks will face Colorado School of Mines on Sunday at 10 a.m., and New Mexico Highlands University at 2 p.m.
