Skyhawks Split with Cougars; Win Series

DURANGO, Colo. – March 5, 2016 – One day after picking up their first two wins of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season, the Fort Lewis College softball team split with Colorado Christian University on Saturday on day two of the four game series.  FLC won game one, 13-5, but fell 14-8 in game two.
 
The Skyhawks picked up where they left off yesterday, posting a 13-5, six-inning win. FLC started the game trailing by five runs (5-0) in the first three innings but responded with four runs in the fourth inning.  Angelique Elemen started the fourth inning with a single up the middle and then Jeovanna Rios singled to the same spot.  Lauren Caldwell reached base on an error that brought home Elemen.  Mandy Owens recorded the second out of the inning on a sacrifice fly that scored Rios.  Gianna Melaragno hit a double to centerfield that scored Caldwell before Missy Fundora drove home Melaragno. 
 
Down 5-4 heading into the fifth inning, the Skyhawks exploded for seven runs on eight hits.  Elemen hit her sixth home run of the season that scored Denae Fisher.  Rios and Caldwell hit back-to-back doubles that brought in Rios before Nikki Klepfer singled to centerfield to drive home Caldwell.  With two outs and the bases load, Fisher reached base on an error and Klepfer scored.  Elemen doubled to center field to score Fisher and Fundora for the sixth and seventh runs of the inning and an 11-5 lead. 
 
In the sixth inning, Laura Ashe grounded out to shortstop but scored Caldwell.  The winning run was scored by Robyn Young who scored on a passed ball.
 
Rachel Foos earned her second win of the season in the circle after pitching the final four innings. She allowed one run on two hits and fanned two batters. Elemen finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and four runs batted in.  Caldwell scored twice while Fundora, Rios, Klepfer and Melaragno each tallied two hits apiece. 
 
FLC finished the game with 17 hits.
 
In the series finale, both teams combined for 33 hits.  CCU edged the Skyhawks in hits, 18-15.
 
Fundora went 4-for-5 at the plate with four runs scored.  Caldwell and Klepfer each went 3-for-4.  Klepfer drove home three runs and hit her first career home. Adriana Rosthenhouasler added two hits as she was one of four Skyhawks to record multiple hits in the second game.
 
Fort Lewis (6-19, 3-9 RMAC) will travel to Black Hills State University for a four game series March 12-13.
