Softball Sweeps Cougars on Opening Day

DURANGO, Colo. – March 4, 2016 – The Fort Lewis College softball team earned their first two wins of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Friday afternoon.  FLC defeated Colorado Christian in today's doubleheader, 5-3 and 13-5.
 
In the first game, FLC recorded five runs on seven hits.   FLC was trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.  With two outs, Jeovanna Rios drew a walk to reach first base and then advanced to second base after Tehenia Telliano hit a single.  Nikki Klepfer drove home two runs when she singled to right field to bring home Lauren Caldwell and Rios.
 
The Cougars regained the lead in the fifth inning before FLC added three runs in the bottom of the inning. Denae Fisher singled that brought home Adriana Rosthenhaulser and Missy FundoraAngelique Elemen then hit a triple to score Fisher for the fifth and final run.
 
Victoria Johnson pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits and fanning eight batters.  Seven Skyhawks accounted for FLC's seven hits.  Fisher and Klepfer each recorded two runs batted in.
 
In the second game of the series, The Skyhawks accounted for 13 runs batted in on 19 hits.
 
Rosthenhausler opened the first inning with a double to left field that scored Fundora.  The Skyhawks lit up in the second inning, scoring seven runs on nine hits for an 8-2 lead. 
 
Leading 9-5 in the sixth inning, the Skyhawks charted four more runs to run rule the Cougars, 13-5.
 
Rachel Foos recorded her first win of the season to improve to 1-5.  Foos pitched two innings before Olivia Goldberg finished the final four innings.  They combined to allow five earned runs on 12 hits.
 
Both teams will square off again tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m.
