Fundora becomes all-time leader in doubles

DURANGO, Colo. – April 10, 2016 – The Fort Lewis College softball team recorded 15 hits in each game Sunday against Western New Mexico University.  FLC won game one, 12-6, but lost game two, 11-9.

Missy Fundora, who is already the all-time hits leader at FLC, became the all-time leader in doubles today.  She tallied a double in game one to tie Destinee DeHerrera's record of 41, and then became the all-time leader in game two (42).

FLC started game one with seven runs in the first inning.  The Skyhawks batted 12 players and posted six hits while the Mustangs committed two errors.

WNMU plated one run in the second inning before the Skyhawks added five more runs in the bottom of the second for a 12-1 lead.  With two outs and two runners on base, Nikki Klepfer singled to left center to bring home Denae Fisher, followed by Gianna Melaragno's single to left field that plated Jeovanna Rios.  Fundora added two runs with a triple to center field that scored Melaragno and Klepfer.  Fundora scored the fifth run of the inning from Adriana Rosthenhausler's single down the right field line.

WNMU added three runs in the third inning and two more in the fifth to prevent being run-ruled.

The Skyhawks posted 15 hits in game one.  Fundora, Rosthenhausler, Tehenia Telliano, Fisher, Klepfer and Melaragno each tallied two hits.  Rosthenhausler led both teams with three runs batted in.

Victoria Johnson went the distance, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and fanning two batters.  Johnson improves to 9-9 on the year.

For the second straight day, the Skyhawks fell in the second game of the day after winning the opening game each day.  FLC fell behind early in the series finale after allowing seven runs in the second inning.

Mandy Owens helped cut the lead in the bottom of the second with a double down the right field line that scored Lauren Caldwell.  Melaragno singled to left field to drive in Klepfer before Elemen singled to bring home Owens to cut the Mustangs lead down to four, 7-3.

Western New Mexico extended their lead to 9-3 in the fifth inning but the Skyhawks started to mount a comeback with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Heading into the final inning, WNMU added two more runs for an 11-7 lead.  With one out and bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Telliano reached first base on a fielder's choice but Melaragno scored to cut the lead down to 11-8.  Elemen then drew a walk to load the bases again, followed by Fisher's single up the middle that plated Fundora for the final score, 11-9.

Olivia Goldberg pitched the first six innings in the circle, allowing seven earned runs on 13 hits and striking out three batters.

Offensively, FLC accounted for 15 hits.  Fundora led the team going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a run batted in.  Elemen and Caldwell each went 2-for-4 and combined for three runs batted in.  Owens added two hits on three at bats, scored twice and drove in one run.
