Football Erases 13-Point Deficit to Earn Road Win

Box Score GUNNISON, Colo. – October 7, 2017 – The Fort Lewis College football team scored 14 points in the final nine minutes and 38 seconds Saturday afternoon at Western State Colorado University, erasing a 13-point deficit and earning a 14-13 win.
 
The win improves the Skyhawks to 2-4 on the season and 2-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  Both of the Skyhawks wins this season have come on the road.  WSCU drops to 0-6 overall and in league games.
 
Western State's first drive of the game started as a result of an interception.  The Mountaineers finished their drive with a 22-yard field goal.
 
Max Smith gave WSCU three more points in the second quarter, when he converted a 50-yard field goal with 11:15 left in the first half.
 
After a 53-yard missed field goal by WSCU with 59 seconds left in the half, the Skyhawks started their final drive of the half on their own 36-yard line.  FLC moved the ball down to the WSCU five yard line, but a missed 22-yard field goal attempt kept the Skyhawks scoreless heading into halftime, 6-0.
 
Western State's final score of the game came in the opening drive of the second half.  A 55-yard kickoff by Frank Larriva was returned 35-yards to set the Mountaineers on their own 45-yard line.  Five plays later WSCU took a 13-0 lead over FLC.
 
The final five drives of the third quarter for both teams ended in punts. 
 
WSCU had a chance to take a 16-0 lead, but a missed 37-yard field goal at 9:47 in the final quarter gave the Skyhawks the ball on their 20-yard line.  Nine plays and 80 yards later, Bo Coleman capped the scoring drive with a 10-yard run into the endzone.  The Skyhawks point after attempt failed, but a WSCU penalty gave FLC a second chance.  Ben Raybon put the ball through the uprights for the Skyhawks seventh point with 5:38 left in the game.
 
On the ensuing drive, Darrian Stickney intercepted WSCU and returned it six yards.  The Skyhawks drive started on the WSCU 39-yard line.  On the seventh play of the drive, Coleman found AJ Shaw for a seven yard touchdown score.  Raybon's extra point attempt was good as FLC took a 14-13 lead with 2:23 remaining.
 
The Skyhawks defense forced WSCU to turn the ball over on downs, as the Mountaineers completed one of five passes, sealing the win for the Skyhawks, 14-13.
 
The Skyhawks finished with 298 yards of total offense, just five fewer than Western State.  FLC posted 153 rushing yards and passed for 145 yards.
 
Coleman attempted 23 passes and completed 11-of-23 for 139 yards and one touchdown.  He also led the rushing corps with 56 yards on the ground on nine carries.  Tyler Telphy chipped in 52 rushing yards.
 
Arealous Hughes caught five passes for 42 yards.  Mason Hatton added four catches for 46 yards. 
 
Max Peets punted seven times for 305 yards, an average of 43.6 yards per punt.
 
Dominic Cochrane and Daniel Walker each tallied eight tackles.  Stickney posted seven tackles, a half sack for a loss of one yard, two tackles for a loss of three yards, and intercepted a pass and returned it six yards.  Christopher Blanton accounted for three tackles for a loss of eight yards.  One of his tackles was a sack for a loss of two yards.
 
After three straight road games, the Skyhawks return home to Ray Dennison Memorial Field on Oct. 14.  FLC will play host to Colorado State University-Pueblo in the 2017 Homecoming Game at 12 p.m.
