DURANGO, Colo. – December 9, 2017 –
Daniel Hernandez made two free throws with eight seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime as the 15
th ranked Fort Lewis College men's basketball team escaped a late comeback Saturday night against Western State Colorado University, 93-92.
Hernandez was also clutch from the free throw line in overtime, hitting two free throws with two seconds left to secure the win as the Skyhawks improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. FLC remains undefeated at home this season at 4-0.
FLC led by seven points, 79-72, with 3:20 left in regulation before the Mountaineers mounted an 11-4 run to knot the game at 83. Hernandez made free throws that gave FLC an 85-83 lead but WSCU's Christian West made a layup with two ticks remaining to force overtime.
The Skyhawks led 91-89 in overtime with 22 seconds remaining but WSCU grabbed a 92-91 lead from Quincy Harding's three-point field goal with 11 ticks left. Hernandez was fouled as he drove toward the baseline and made both free throws for the win.
Hernandez led FLC in scoring with 21 points. He made 7-of-14 field goals, 3-of-4 three-point field goals and all six free throw attempts.
Rasmus Bach continued his consecutive made free throw streak after making all seven attempts on Saturday. Bach, who finished the night with 19 points, is 28-for-28 this season.
Brandon Wilson tallied 13 points and nine rebounds, and
Marquel Beasley chipped in 16 points and seven caroms.
Only two free throws were missed between the two teams. The Mountaineers made all 12 attempts while the Skyhawks made 24-of-26 (92.3 percent).
Harding led all players with 24 points. He scored all seven of the Mountaineers points in overtime.
The Skyhawks will play host to Adams State University on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
