GOLDEN, Colo. – March 11, 2017 – Thirty-six made free throws, including nine in overtime, propelled the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team to a 94-90 win over Tarleton State University Saturday night at Lockridge Arena in Golden, Colo. in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball South Central Regional Tournament.
The 36 made free throws are the third most in program history. Junior guard
Rasmus Bach was a perfect 12-for-12 from the line and senior guard
Joshua Blaylock made 13-of-16 attempts.
Tonight's overtime game is the fifth for the Skyhawks this season, and their third overtime game in the last seven games.
The Skyhawks trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half and entered halftime with a seven point deficit, 42-35.
Blaylock hit one of his five three-pointers with 10:30 left in regulation to tie the game at 61-61. Blaylock would later hit a layup at the 6:30 minute mark that gave FLC a 69-68 lead that sparked a 7-0 run.
The Skyhawks finished the second half of the second half making 7-of-8 free throws and 6-of-14 field goals.
FLC led 80-77 with 1:53 left in regulation but closed out the game going 0-for-3 from the field as TSU made a layup and free throw to tie the game and send it to overtime.
In the extra period, the Skyhawks made 9-of-10 free throws as they outscored TSU, 14-10. Bach hit all four free throw attempts while Blaylock netted 3-of-4 and
Brandon Wilson went 2-for-2 from the line.
Blaylock finished with a game high 36 points, one shy off his career high. He made 9-of-20 field goals, 5-of-14 three-point field goals and 13-of-16 free throws. Wilson and Bach each scored 14 points and both were perfect from the charity stripe.
Daniel Hernandez came off the bench to net 13 points after hitting 4-of-7 field goals and all three free throw attempts.
Blaylock and
Alex Semadeni led the Skyhawks with seven caroms each.
FLC finished the game making 25-of-60 field goals for 41.7 percent.
Chantz Chambers led TSU with 32 points.
The Skyhawks will face No. 11 Colorado School of Mines on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. It will be the third time in eight games the two teams have faced each other, and the second time in the last three games.
