LAKEWOOD, Colo. – March 5, 2017 – Sunday's Fort Lewis College softball doubleheader at Colorado Christian University resulted in two setbacks for the Skyhawks as the Cougars completed the four game sweep over FLC. The Skyhawks were shutout in five innings in the first game of the series, 8-0, and were edged in game two, 6-5.
The losses drop the Skyhawks to 1-16 on the season and 0-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. CCU improves to 17-7 overall and 7-1 in league games.
In game three of the four game series and Sunday's opening game, CCU scored five of their eight runs off of three home runs.
FLC was held to three hits by
Allison Young,
Gianna Melaragno and
Lauren Caldwell.
In the series finale, the Skyhawks came within one run of tying CCU but fell short, 6-5.
FLC scored the first run of the game in the second inning when
Mandy Owens singled.
Robyn Hall scored on the play after an error by CCU's leftfielder.
CCU tied the game in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly, and then added two more runs on the third inning. The Cougars added three runs in the fourth inning for a 6-1 lead.
In the fifth inning with two outs and two runners on base,
Angelique Elemen singled to center field to score
Adriana Rosthenhausler and Young.
Tehenia Telliano then doubled to left field to score Elemen and cut the Cougars lead down to two runs, 6-4.
Tristen Gilbert led off the sixth inning with a single home run for her first homer of the season. FLC was held scoreless the remainder of the game for the 6-5 loss.
Elemen finished with two hits, two runs batted in and one run scored.
Five Skyhawk pitchers saw action in the circle. The Skyhawks held CCU to six hits.
Fort Lewis will open their home season March 11-12 against MSU Denver at the Aztec Tiger Sports Complex in Aztec, N.M.
