DURANGO, Colo. – May 12, 2017 – Fort Lewis College Director of Athletics
Gary Hunter has announced he will be resigning from his position, effective Sept. 1, 2017. Dr. Hunter has served as the Skyhawks Director of Athletics for the past six years.
"I want to thank my very dear friend, President Dene Thomas, and the FLC campus community for six wonderful years as the Director of Athletics," said Hunter. "I also owe a deep debt of gratitude to my staff and coaches. They do so much with so little. We have the very best personnel in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. I will be checking their progress regularly.
"I will miss FLC and Durango, but I look forward to working with my son in developing a new stadium and starting a new professional baseball team in the Chicago area."
Hunter previously served as athletic director at two NCAA Division I schools, Wichita State University and the University of Idaho, as well as associate director of athletics at the University of Kansas.
"
Gary Hunter is the best AD I have ever worked with," said FLC President Dr. Dene Thomas. "He cares about our student-athletes academic performance and the quality and integrity of the program. Gary has character; he is one of the most honest, straight-forward, hard-working and trustworthy people I know.
"Gary came in the summer of 2011 to work with me for a couple of months. I am happy to have had the opportunity to work with him for the past six years. I wish him well."
His career includes extensive experience at the professional level, including the senior executive vice president of the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche from 1993-96. Hunter also supervised the acquisition and start-up of the Colorado Avalanche, which relocated from Quebec to Denver in 1995. Hunter also served as commissioner of the Continental Basketball Association and chief executive officer of the CBA's Idaho Stampede. He began his professional career as an attorney in the Kansas City area.
