Volleyball Cruises to Third Straight Win With Sweep at Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Behind a new season-high .300 hitting percentage, it was all Fort Lewis College Tuesday night, as the Skyhawk volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-14) Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Adams State University inside Plachy Hall.

The offense was clicking from the start, as FLC (4-9, 4-5 RMAC) hit .306 in the first set and then closed with a .368 percentage in a dominating third set. Overall, the Skyhawks tallied 42 kills to nine errors in 110 chances for a .300 hitting percentage. On the other side, FLC shut down Adams State (6-11, 3-6 RMAC) as the Grizzlies were limited to just .089 percentage, with 39 kills to 27 errors in 135 chances. Part of contributing to the 27 errors were 10 blocks by the Skyhawks. FLC also held the edge in assists (39-35) and digs (57-53). Neither team had a service ace.

Tye Wedhorn led the offense with 12 kills, followed by 11 from Haley Christiansen and nine from Bailey Longacre. Wedhorn nearly had a double-double with eight blocks and Maddie LeBlanc added six. Kendra Swackenberg against setup the offense with 34 assists, while Christiansen had 19 digs for her 10th double-double of the season.

The fourth conference win already equals last year's total. The three game winning streak is the first since FLC started out last season with three straight wins at the OPSU Aggies Challenge. The win also ties FLC with New Mexico Highlands for eighth in the RMAC standings.

Trailing 11-10 in the first set, FLC put together their first big run of the night when Wedhorn recorded a kill to help start a 4-0 run. Ohiyah Shirley added a kill and then two straight kills from Wedhorn had the Skyhawks looking at a 14-11 lead. After Adams State came back to tie the set at 16, Longacre countered with a kill to help start a 3-0 run with Swackenberg and Longacre combining for a block and then an attacking error had FLC holding a 19-16 lead. Another 3-0 burst later in the set helped move the Skyhawks out to a 23-18 lead. Christiansen recorded a kill and then after a bad set, Wedhorn and LeBlanc combined for a block to end the rally. The Grizzlies put together one last run to get to within two at 23-21, but FLC stayed with it and closed out the set behind a kill by Wedhorn and then a double-block from Wedhorn and LeBlanc gave FLC the 25-22 opening set win.

Three straight attack errors by Adams State helped move the Skyhawks out to an 8-5 lead in the second set. A Christiansen kill and then two more Grizzly errors moved FLC out to a 12-7 lead forcing an Adams State timeout. Adams State made a run to get back to within three at 18-15, but like the first set, it was too much Skyhawks. Longacre and Christiansen added kills to move the lead to five. A Shirley kill and a double-block by Wedhorn and Shirley moved FLC to set point at 24-17. After two points by the Grizzlies, Wedhorn capped the set for FLC with a kill for the 25-19 second set win and 2-0 match lead.

An early Wedhorn kill helped ignite FLC in the third set as that started a 7-0 run to push the Skyhawks out to an 8-3 lead. During the run, Christiansen and Wedhorn combined for a block, Christiansen and Wedhorn combined for a block, Christiansen added a pair of kills and then an Adams State attack error ended the run. Longacre and Swackenberg added kills a few points later to extend the lead to 14-7. Ahead 19-12, FLC won six of the final eight points to cruise to the win. Longacre took over down the stretch with three straight kills to seal the set at 25-14 and the match at 3-0.

Julianna Zamora led the Grizzlies with nine kills, while Shannon Mulkey added eight. Rachael Ringler dished out 30 assists, Atira Jells had three blocks and Mackenzie Swanson collected 13 digs.

FLC will remain on the road this week as they will play at Regis on Friday starting at 7 p.m.
