Volleyball Pushes Regis in Second Set, Graefe Tallies 15 Digs

DENVER, Colo. – The second set went right down-to-the-wire. After the Fort Lewis College volleyball team used a 3-0 run to take a late 23-21 lead in the second set, Regis University was able to recover to score the next four points and take the set. The Rangers also took sets one and three on their way to winning 3-0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-13) Friday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

The middle set was almost there for the taking for FLC (4-10, 4-6 RMAC). Following a kill by Jacalyn Sharko, the Skyhawks used a quick 3-0 run to move ahead 9-7 after a pair of attack errors by Regis (12-7, 8-2 RMAC). FLC forced the Rangers into using their second timeout of the set at 18-15 when Bailey Longacre and Kendra Swackenberg each recorded kills. Regis responded with a 4-0 run to regain the lead at 19-18. With Regis still ahead at 21-20, Swackenberg tallied a kill to help start another 3-0 run as Tye Wedhorn and Haley Christiansen combined for a block and Wedhorn a kill for the 23-21 lead. Just when it looked like FLC was going to take the second set, Regis answered with a 4-0 run, behind three kills from Nikki Kennedy, to take the set at 25-23.

In the opening set, Regis got off to a strong 9-3 lead. FLC tried to get back into the set with kills from Longacre, Christiansen, Swackenberg, Jacalyn Sharko, Maddie LeBlanc and Wedhorn, but the Rangers hit .483 for the set to take the 25-11 opening set win.

In the third set, Christiansen and Wedhorn helped tie the set at two-all with back-to-back kills. Regis responded with a 5-0 run to jump out to a 7-2 advantage. FLC got back to within six a few times, first on a kill by Swackenberg and then on a kill by Sharko at 12-6. Christiansen and LeBlanc tallied points down the stretch, but it was too much Regis as they utilized a .382 hitting percentage to take the set at 25-13 and the match at 3-0.

Swackenberg and Wedhorn led the team with six kills. Swackenberg also had 18 assists. Christiansen had a service ace and block, while Megan Graefe tallied 15 digs.

Isabelle Gosar and Kennedy led the Rangers in kills with 12, Gosar added four service aces and Kennedy had six blocks. Silvia Basso dished out 40 assists and Kristina Schell had 13 digs. The Rangers came into the game receiving votes in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll.

FLC will remain in the Denver area as they will face Colorado Christian tomorrow (Saturday) night starting at 5 p.m. The Cougars defeated Adams State 3-1 on Friday.
