Women’s Basketball Cruises Past Cowgirls

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Four players scored in double-figures as the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team rolled to a 77-64 non-conference victory past New Mexico Highlands Monday.

"We played well for most of the game, just got sloppy in the fourth quarter when we were ahead by a good margin," Head Coach Jason Flores said. "Our defense was solid for a good stretch and we had a good rhythm offensively when we stretched the lead."

Alyssa Yocky, Alyssa Adams, Jordan Carter and Tanisha Begay combined for 43 points, while Kayla Herrera added eight, Hanna Valencia with seven and Kaitlyn Romero with six. Herrera again led the way in rebounding pulling down 11. Yocky added three steals and went 4-6 from the field for her 11 points. Adams also reached 11 points on 4-8 shooting and four assists. Carter reached 11 points on 5-10 shooting and five rebounds. Begay added 10 points on 4-8 shooting and three rebounds.

FLC (3-2) made 29-67 (43) from the field, 10-32 (31) from three and 9-14 (64) from the foul line. Carter opened the scoring two minutes in with a jumper off the fastbreak. NMHU (2-3) fought back to within one at 5-4 when the Skyhawks went on a 15-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Yocky started the run with a jumper at the 5:58 mark. Herrera added a jumper, MorningRose Tobey dialed long distance, Carter spun in a layup off the fastbreak, Aubre Fortner hit a foul shot, Yocky hit two from the line before Begay capped the run with a three at the 1:40 mark for a 20-4 lead.

Abigail Jensen opened the scoring in the second quarter with a free throw and then Begay added a jumper and Romero connected on a three at the 8:48 mark to push the advantage to 26-5. The Cowgirls would outscore FLC 16-10 the rest of the half to leave the Skyhawks with a 36-21 lead at halftime.

The third quarter started off just like the other quarters for FLC as Carter hit a jumper 40 seconds in. A layup by Yocky and then a three pointer from Carter had the Skyhawks on a 7-0 run over the first three minutes to start the third quarter and move FLC out to a 43-21 lead.

Romero drilled a three-pointer with two minutes to play in the third to move FLC out to a 29-point lead at 55-26. NMHU closed the third on an 8-3 run to leave FLC with a 58-34 lead.
NMHU outscored FLC 30-19 in the final quarter to leave the Skyhawks with a 77-64 victory. The two teams will face each other again on Dec. 7 in Las Vegas starting at 5:30 p.m. as that game will count as an RMAC contest.

Jordyn Lewis led NMHU with 20 points, while Brianna Stewart added 11 points. The Cowgirls made 22-54 (41) from the field, 5-14 (36) from three and 15-16 (94) from the foul line. FLC led on points off turnovers (12-7), second-chance points (13-2), and bench points (36-13).

The Skyhawks will now be off until Saturday, Dec. 1 when they will open RMAC play at Adams State in Alamosa.
