Carter and Yocky Post Double-Doubles in Tight Game at Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Jordan Carter went for 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Alyssa Yocky added 11 points and 11 rebounds, but despite the strong game from both post players, Adams State was able to hold off a late rally by the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team to take the 65-63 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday night inside Plachy Hall.

Carter went 8-15 from the field and added two assists, while Yocky went 4-7 and had two assists. Sydney Candelaria and Kayla Herrera each reached double-figures with Candelaria going for 13 points and Herrera adding 12 points. FLC (3-3, 0-1 RMAC) took care of the ball turning it over just eight times. The Skyhawks went 24-72 (33) from the field, 6-20 (30) from three and 9-19 (47) at the foul line. The Skyhawks held the edge on second-chance points (20-14), points in the paint (30-20) and in fastbreak points (6-2).

Adams State (1-2, 1-0 RMAC) opened the scoring putting up the first four points of the game. Trailing 7-1 nearly two minutes in, the Skyhawks flipped the script with a 7-0 run to grab their first lead of the game. Yocky started the run with a layup off the fastbreak. MorningRose Tobey dialed long distance and then a layup by Yocky capped the run with a layup at the 4:07 mark for the 8-7 FLC lead.

The Grizzlies outscored FLC 10-3 over the final four minutes of the quarter to take a 17-11 lead into the second quarter.

Herrera came out firing to start the second as she drilled a three-pointer 14 seconds in. Carter added a layup on the next trip down off an offensive rebound to trim the deficit to one. FLC pushed back in front just under the midway point of the quarter when Abigail Jensen converted a three-point-play for the 25-24 lead.

The Skyhawks held a pair of two point leads the remainder of the quarter before Brooke Neal split a pair from the line to give Adams State a 32-31 lead at halftime.

Trailing by four early in the third quarter, Carter hit a layup and then a three by Candelaria moved FLC again back in front by one at 38-37. Adams State then controlled play over the next several minutes to go in front by seven before FLC closed the quarter with a jumper by Carter and a three ball by Candelaria left the Grizzlies looking at a 50-47 lead entering the final 10 minutes.

Herrera opened the scoring in the fourth with a layup a minute in. After pulling to within one, Adams State went on a 9-2 run to move out to a 59-51 lead with 4:58 to play.

FLC was behind the eight ball with 3:48 to play when a Stephanie Ruiz jumper moved Adams State out to their largest lead at 61-52. The Skyhawks didn't go away, instead fighting back to make things interesting down the stretch.

Candelaria helped start the rally down the stretch with a pair of free throws. Yocky then sunk two from the line with a minute to play to pull FLC to within five. After another defensive stop, Herrera hit a difficult three-pointer in front of the Skyhawks bench to make it a 61-59 game with 21 seconds to play.

FLC brought the press on the ensuing in-bounds and forced a turnover that was picked up by Herrera and she was fouled with 13 seconds left. She hit one of two from the line leaving it a 61-60 game. The Skyhawks had to foul and Ruiz hit both for Adams State to take a 63-60 lead with nine seconds to play.

FLC went for the tie on their next trip down the floor, but the shot was off. The Skyhawks were forced to foul again and after Marshell Hollins hit two from the line, Candelaria hit a three at the buzzer, but Adams State held on for the 65-63 victory.

Ruiz led Adams State with 22 points, she also had eight rebounds. Ki'asha Harris added 12 points and a double-double with 11 rebounds. The Grizzlies made just 18-66 (27) from the field, 5-19 (26) from three and took advantage at the foul line going 24-31 (77).

FLC will remain on the road this coming week as they will play at New Mexico Highlands on Friday and then at CSU-Pueblo on Saturday with both games starting at 5 p.m.
