Hot Shooting First Half Powers Men’s Basketball Past Haskell

DURANGO, Colo. – The shots were certainly falling to start the game on Wednesday night for the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team. The Skyhawks connected on 53 percent from the field and 47 percent from three over the first 20 minutes of action to open a commanding lead on their way to claiming the 88-70 win over Haskell Indian Nations.

FLC (4-1) couldn't have asked for a better start, making 17-32 from the field and 7-15 in the first half. The Skyhawks held a 52-31 lead entering halftime. Marquel Beasley continued his strong play posting a game-high 25 points on 6-13 shooting. He went 2-4 from three and 11-13 at the foul line, making 11 straight. He also added seven rebounds, six assists, two steals and a block. Otas Iyekekpolor added 15 points, nine rebounds and sent back four blocks, making 6-8 from the field. Alex Semadeni and Cesar Molina added 14 points apiece with Semadeni going 6-10 from the field, along with six rebounds and five assists, while Molina went 4-6 from the field, 3-5 from three, added two steals and dished out five assists.

Haskell (3-4) scored the first points 18 seconds in and it would be their only lead of the night. Semadeni connected on the next trip down to help ignite a 9-0 run with Molina hitting a three and then turning it into a four-point-play, before Beasley sunk a triple for the 9-2 lead not even two minutes in.

Molina stepped back and connected on another three-pointer at the 16:29 mark to push the lead to double-digits at 15-5. Holding a nine-point lead, FLC ripped off a 10-0 run midway through the half when Iyekekpolor started the run with a layup. Keven Biggs drilled a three-pointer, Brendan La Rose put down a big dunk off a nice pass from Semadeni and then Biggs hit another long ball for the 28-9 lead.

The lead got as high as 22 at one point when Semadeni sunk a jumper at the eight-minute mark of the first half before FLC took a 52-31 lead into halftime.

The Skyhawks started the second half just like the first when Beasley hit a layup, then hit a three-pointer and then Iyekekpolor ended the quick 7-0 run with a layup to push the lead to 59-31 two minutes in.

Haskell made a couple of late runs to get back to within 17, but a three-pointer by Will Wittman would close the scoring for the Skyhawks and send them to the 88-70 victory.

FLC ended up making 30-69 (44) from the field, 10-34 (29) from three and 18-25 (72) at the foul line. Turnovers were key as FLC committed just seven, while forcing 17 and they turned that into a 32-10 points off turnovers advantage. The Skyhawks also held the edge on second-chance points (16-11) and points in the paint (34-32).

Caison Green led Haskell with 17 points, while Tristan Keah-Tigh added 13 and Nakia Hendricks with 10. Haskell made 27-57 (47) from the field, 5-19 (26) from three and 11-14 (79) at the foul line.

FLC will now be off for the rest of the Thanksgiving week before they return to action to open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Saturday, December 1 at Adams State starting at 7:30 p.m. The Skyhawks won't play at home again until Dec. 15 when they host South Dakota Mines.
