Four Reach Double-Figures in Scoring as Men’s Basketball Goes to OT With Grizzlies

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Marquel Beasley, Riley Farris, Alex Semadeni and Keven Biggs all reached double-figures and combined 51 points as the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team ended up going to overtime with Adams State and the Grizzlies were able to pull out the 68-60 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday night in the conference opener for both teams inside Plachy Hall.

Each team had high leads of eight in the game, with FLC's (4-2, 0-1 RMAC) coming in the first half and Adams State's (1-5, 1-0 RMAC) in overtime. Beasley led the team with 17 points on 7-17 shooting, along with seven rebounds, two assists, a block and two steals in 39 minutes. Farris returned to action and chipped in 13 points, four rebounds and two assists. Semadeni tallied 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and a block in 39 minutes. Biggs added 10 points and seven rebounds. FLC went 23-60 (38) from the field, 3-20 (15) from three and 11-15 (73) at the foul line.

Otas Iyekekpolor opened the scoring 24 seconds in with a jumper after he tallied a block on the defensive end. Tied at four, FLC moved out to a 10-4 lead with Beasley hitting a layup, Iyekekpolor added two from the line and then Farris capped the 6-0 run with a jumper at the 14:22 mark.

The Skyhawks jumped out to their largest lead of the night at 18-10 near the midway point of the half when Biggs sent down a dunk off an assist by Brendan La Rose. Beasley kept FLC in front with a layup at the 5:50 mark for a 24-20 lead before the Grizzlies closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 31-26 lead into the locker rooms.

Farris and Beasley hit back-to-back three-pointers to help erase the deficit and push FLC back in front 38-33 at the 13:33 mark. The Grizzlies answered with an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to pull back ahead at 41-38.

The teams then fought down the stretch with each possession mattering as FLC using a jumper by Beasley and dunk by Biggs in transition to go back ahead 44-43. FLC looked to be in good shape with 2:59 to play when Michael Ranson drilled a three to move the lead out to 53-48.

Adams State scored the next five points to tie the game at 53. The Skyhawks then turned a big steal by Beasley into points when Biggs was fouled and he hit both from the line to give FLC a 55-53 lead with eight seconds to play.

Davere Creighton delivered big on the next trip down the floor for Adams State as he was fouled with three seconds to play. The Grizzlies were in the one-and-one bonus and he hit both to tie the game and send it to overtime.

The Grizzlies came out on fire to start the extra session scoring the first eight points to open a 63-55 lead with 2:36 to play. Beasley broke the run with a pair from the line at the 2:22 mark. Semadeni then drew a foul on the following in-bounds play and sunk two more from the line to trim the deficit to four at 63-59.

Adams State hit two from the line on their next trip down to keep the lead at six. After the teams traded possessions and free throws, the Grizzlies closed the scoring with a layup to take the 68-60 victory.

Creighton paced the Grizzlies with 17 points and made it a double-double with 12 rebounds. Shemar Johnson also scored 17 points and Ricky Norris rounded out the three in double-figures with 12 points. Adams State went 26-66 (39) from the field, 5-22 (23) from three and 11-20 (55) from the foul line.

The teams tied on points off turnovers (14-14), Adams State held a slight on second-chance points (11-10), a big edge in bench points (31-16), points in the paint (40-28) and fastbreak points (16-2).

FLC will remain on the road this week when they will play at New Mexico Highlands on Friday and then at CSU-Pueblo on Saturday with both games starting at 7 p.m.
