Football Makes Long Trek to Rapid City to Face South Dakota Mines

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Fort Lewis College football team will travel over 700 miles for the final game of the regular season when they face South Dakota Mines in Rapid City this Saturday at 1 p.m.

FLC is 1-8 overall and 1-8 in RMAC play and are coming off a bye week. Last time out, it was a tough matchup with then No. 13 CSU-Pueblo as the ThunderWolves claimed the 39-0 victory in Pueblo.

Brayden Lucero leads the rushing attack going for 611 yards on 138 carries and two touchdowns. He has a long carry of 49 yards. Jack Harper adds a pair of rushing touchdowns. Nick McNamee has completed 98-177 for 1,071 yards and 11 touchdowns. Erik Ornduff has added 19 completions in 38 attempts for 109 yards and a score. Ta'Jon Mondy-Smith also has spent time this season at quarterback completing 6-13 for 82 yards and a touchdown. Four receivers have at least 300 yards receiving led by 438 from Mondy-Smith. He has 19 total receptions and six touchdowns. Mason Hatton leads the team with 46 grabs for 406 yards and three scores. Parker Strahler adds 303 yards on nine catches and a pair of touchdowns. Arealous Hughes has two touchdown receptions.

On defense, Isiah Mayberry leads the Skyhawks with 68 tackles, 30 solo, with 12.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick. Donell Pleasant III has 64 tackles, with a team-high 44 solo. He has four tackles for loss, two interceptions, a forced fumble and four passes defended. Darrian Stickney gives FLC three players with at least 60 tackles as he is right at 60, including 20 solo tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, three qb hurries and a pass defended. Lorenzo Tanner leads the way in sacks with three and Suli Tukumoeatu is tied with Pleasant III for the team-high in interceptions with two. George Marpaung has a team-best 13.5 tackles for a loss of 46 yards.

FLC ranks in the top-five in the RMAC and high in several national categories including fifth in the RMAC and 56th nationally in blocked kicks (3), first in the RMAC and fifth nationally in defensive touchdowns (4), first in the RMAC and 39th nationally in fewest penalties (58), fourth in the RMAC and 56th nationally in fewest penalties per game (6.44), first in the RMAC and 32nd nationally in fewest penalty yards per game (510), second in the RMAC and 45th nationally in fewest penalty yards per game (56.67), fourth in the RMAC in first downs defense (208), second in the RMAC and 54th nationally in fumbles lost (6), third in the RMAC and 28th nationally in net punting (36.55), fourth in the RMAC and 80th nationally in rushing defense (150.6), third in the RMAC and 38th nationally in team tackles for loss (7.7) and fourth in the RMAC in total defense (425.6).

Individually, Javonta Norman is fifth in the RMAC in combined kick return yards (350). McNamee is sixth in the RMAC and 86th nationally in completion percentage (.554), ninth in the RMAC in completions per game (10.89), eighth in the RMAC in passing efficiency (110.9), eighth in the RMAC and 88th nationally in passing touchdowns (11) and eighth in the RMAC in passing yards per completion (10.93). Mayberry is third in the RMAC and 61st nationally in forced fumbles (0.22), sixth in the RMAC and 54th nationally in tackles for loss (1.4). Tukumoeatu is third in the RMAC and sixth nationally in fumbles recovered (3) and he is 11th in the RMAC and 92nd nationally in passes defended per game (1.0). Max Peets is second in the RMAC and third nationally in punting average (44.3). Mondy-Smith is ninth in the RMAC and 79th nationally in receiving touchdowns (6) and is first in the RMAC and seventh nationally in yards per reception (23.05). Hatton is eighth in the RMAC and 47th nationally in receptions per game (5.1). Lucero is 11th in the RMAC in rushing yards (611) and 12th in the RMAC in rushing yards per game (67.9). Pleasant III is third in the RMAC and 28th nationally in solo tackles per game (5.5) and he is also 11th in the RMAC and 93rd nationally in total tackles per game (8.0). Marpaung is second in the RMAC and 33rd nationally in tackles or loss (1.5).

Last season, FLC won a shootout against South Dakota Mines, 44-35, in Durango. Jake Lowry completed 8-19 for 137 yards and two touchdowns. TJ Telphy rushed 23 times for 170 yards and a score, while Lowry also added a rushing touchdown and 58 total yards on the ground. Hughes caught one pass, but it was a big one going for 54 yards and a score. Mondy-Smith also had a receiving touchdown. Mayberry led the defense with 10 tackles, with two tackles for loss and a sack. OJ Thompson added nine tackles and both Pleasant III and Christopher Blanton had six tackles apiece.

During the last meeting in Rapid City in 2016, it was also a high-scoring affair with the teams combining for 105 points and FLC ended up with the 53-52 win in overtime. The Skyhawks won that game after getting the tying score on their possession in overtime and in lieu of kicking the extra point, went for two and converted to pick up the victory.

South Dakota Mines is 4-6 overall this season and 3-6 in RMAC play. The Hardrockers are 4-1 at home this season with their only loss coming this past weekend to Chadron State (50-46). South Dakota Mines is a team that scores a lot (averaging 44 points per game), but also allows a lot (giving up 42 points per contest).

Connor Silveria leads the rushing attack going for 1,220 yards and 12 touchdowns on 158 carries. He had a game of all games against Adams State a few weeks ago when he rushed for 425 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Jake Sullivan has also tallied a strong rushing attack this year going for 327 yards and 10 touchdowns. Sullivan has completed 267-411 for 3,283 yards and 28 touchdowns. Isaiah Manley has been the main target hauling in 81 passes for 1,115 yards and 11 touchdowns. Joe Luebbers has 49 catches for 698 yards and five touchdowns.

On defense, Will Carroll has 74 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. Justin Broekemeier adds 56 tackles and Christian Singleton has 55 stops, with 8.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. Dominick Jackson has come away with six interceptions in the secondary.
