Beasley Tallies 21 Points in Overtime Battle With Hardrockers

DURANGO, Colo. – Marquel Beasley shot 8-14 from the field, 2-3 from three and 3-3 at the foul line to pace the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team with 21 points Saturday night. Despite holding a halftime lead, South Dakota Mines stormed back to force overtime and defeat the Skyhawks 76-67 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

FLC (5-4, 1-3 RMAC) looked to be in good shape, leading a majority of the game and being in front by as much as 11 in the first half. In fact, the Skyhawks led for almost the first 30 minutes of the game when South Dakota Mines (4-7, 2-2 RMAC) picked up their first lead at 46-45 with 10:55 to play.

While Beasley certainly had a big game, three others also scored in double-figures with AJ Sparks adding 14 points, Kireed John with 12 points and Otas Iyekekpolor with 10 points. Iyekekpolor also added four blocks and six rebounds.

As it turned out, FLC ended up shooting 38 percent (21-56) from the field for the game, 10-28 (35) from three and 15-20 (75) at the foul line and shot better in the second half making 11-22 (50) from the field, compared to 10-28 (36) through the first 20 minutes.

While the Skyhawks turned it up in the second half, so did the Hardrockers as they shot a sizzling 64 percent (16-25) over the final 25 minutes of the game.

Beasley opened the scoring 45 seconds in with a jumper. Johnson stretched the lead to three with the first of four three-pointers two minutes in. Ahead by one, Iyekekpolor helped start a quick 8-0 run with a layup. Iyekekpolor then drilled a three-pointer, before Beasley closed the run with his own long ball at the 15:11 mark leaving FLC with the 13-4 lead and a quick timeout by the Hardrockers.

Beasley continued to have the hot hand, sinking another three a minute later to push the lead into double-digits and then a free throw by Sparks had FLC with their largest lead of the night at 17-6 with 12:31 to play in the half.

The lead remained around double-digits with seven minutes in the half off a three-point-play by Beasley. South Dakota Mines pushed to within five when Will Wittman sunk a corner three at the buzzer leaving the Skyhawks with a 31-23 lead at halftime.

A Beasley jumper kept the advantage at eight when the Hardrockers went on a 7-0 run to get to within one. FLC had an answer with Sparks hitting a jumper in the paint and then assisting on a three that was drilled by Johnson to keep the lead at six.

Still holding a four-point lead with 12 minutes to go off a layup by Brendan La Rose, the Hardrockers answered with a 5-0 spurt to take their first lead of the game. Johnson quickly answered with a nice pump-fake and then wide open three to help FLC regain the lead at 48-46.

Johnson helped stretch the lead to five with another long ball at the 6:30 mark, but South Dakota Mines refused to go away, coming back with a 4-0 run to pull to within one. The teams continued to either tie or change leads down the stretch, with the Hardrockers going in front 64-62 with 47 seconds to play.

FLC answered when Sparks drove and as the defense collapsed on him in the paint, he dished to Beasley for the layup to knot the game at 64 with 34 seconds to play. South Dakota Mines chose to not take a timeout and ran the clock down, but in the process they started their offense too late and ended up with a shot clock violation.

The Skyhawks still had roughly four seconds to get a winning shot off, but a scramble off the in-bounds and later a fight for the ball near the wing resulted in a turnover and sending the game to the extra session.

South Dakota Mines opened the scoring just over a minute in. Iyekekpolor answered with two from the line to tie the game again at 66. The Hardrockers then went on a big 6-0 run to basically grab the win as Logan Elers, Allec Williams and Troy Brady all sunk jumpers to push the lead to 72-66 with just 54 seconds to play.

Sparks answered with a foul shot to trim the deficit to five, but that was as close as the Skyhawks could get the rest of the way.

Elers led South Dakota Mines with 21 points and added six rebounds. Brady tallied 15 points and Damani Hayesm added 12. South Dakota Mines ended up making 31-58 (53) from the field, 3-16 (19) from three and 11-12 (92) at the foul line.

FLC held the advantage on bench points (20-17), while South Dakota Mines had a big edge on points in the paint (42-16) and in fastbreak points (14-2).

The Skyhawks will remain at home to face Black Hills State tomorrow (Sunday) starting at 5:30 p.m. inside Whalen Gym. Black Hills State picked up a 85-69 win on Saturday at Adams State.
