Strong Defensive Effort Leads Women’s Basketball Past South Dakota Mines

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team kept South Dakota Mines to just four points in the third quarter and 15 total in the second half on their way to taking the 62-44 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday night inside Whalen Gym.

FLC (5-4, 2-2 RMAC) held the Hardrockers (2-5, 0-4 RMAC) to 32 percent (15-47) shooting effort from the field and 7-18 (39) from three. The defense also forced 18 turnovers which led to a 21-6 edge on points off turnovers.

The Skyhawks held South Dakota Mines without a point for nearly eight minutes in the third quarter and then used an 11-0 run over the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Six Skyhawks scored at least six points with Aubre Fortner pouring in 14 points on 6-11 shooting and 2-2 from three. She also pulled down three rebounds, added an assist, a block and two steals in 23 minutes. Alyssa Yocky just missed out on a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, along with four assists and both a block and steal. Sydney Candelaria added nine points, Kayla Herrera and Jordan Carter added eight points apiece and Alyssa Adams tallied six.

Carter got FLC going right out of the gate hitting a jumper a minute in. That ignited a 7-0 run with Candelaria dialing long distance and then hitting a layup off her own steal for the 7-0 lead two minutes in.

After South Dakota Mines had the lead down to two, Herrera, Candelaria and a three by Kaitlyn Romero quickly had the lead back out to nine at 16-7 with four minutes to go in the opening quarter. The teams traded threes to end the quarter with Adams hitting one with nine seconds left for FLC to leave the Skyhawks with a 21-14 lead through the first 10 minutes.

South Dakota Mines fought back to within three a couple of times in the second quarter with the last coming at 25-22 near the midway point. Fortner countered with a jumper and then Yocky drilled a three to push the lead back to eight. FLC kept the lead around eight the rest of the half, with Yocky closing the scoring right at the buzzer with a jumper in the paint off a pass from Hanna Valencia to take a 37-29 halftime lead.

The third quarter then featured only nine combined points between the teams. Candelaria scored the first points of the quarter at the 5:46 mark hitting a layup. After the Hardrockers scored their first points with roughly two minutes to go, Herrera hit a three and a pair of foul shots by South Dakota Mines left FLC with a 42-33 lead entering the final quarter.

That's when FLC poured it on to seal the win in the fourth. The Skyhawks came out red-hot getting a three by Adams, a jumper by Yocky, a three by Fortner and then a three by Herrera helped FLC balloon the lead out to 20 at 53-33.

South Dakota Mines made one last run to pull to within 13, but Fortner and Yocky answered with baskets to help FLC cruise to the victory.

FLC made 26-57 (46) from the field and shot well from three connecting on 10-21 (48). They only attempted one free throw and went 0-1. The Skyhawks held the advantage on bench points (20-13), points in the paint (26-16) and fastbreak points (4-2).

Taylor Molstad paced the Hardrockers with 12 points, while Sami Steffeck added eight.

The Skyhawks, now 3-0 inside Whalen Gym this year, will be right back in action tomorrow (Sunday) when they will host #18 Black Hills State starting at 3:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets defeated Adams State 76-51 Saturday night.
