Candelaria and Herrera Combine for 25 Points against #18 Black Hills State

DURANGO, Colo. – Despite 14 points from Sydney Candelaria and 11 more from Kayla Herrera, a big second half by #18 Black Hills State helped power the Yellow Jackets to a 65-55 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team Sunday afternoon inside Whalen Gym.

FLC (5-5, 2-3 RMAC) looked to be in good shape after posting a 20-11 second quarter. At one point the Skyhawks held a seven-point lead in the second half before holding a 28-25 lead at the break.

The Skyhawks put together another solid effort on defense forcing 21 turnovers and turning that into a 22-10 advantage on points off turnovers.

BHSU (8-1, 4-1 RMAC) opened the scoring nearly three minutes in when Racquel Wientjes hit a three-pointer. A three-pointer by Tanisha Begay pushed the Skyhawks in front at the 3:15 mark for the 8-6 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets closed the first quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 14-8 lead.

Herrera opened the scoring in the second quarter with a jumper 18 seconds in. Still down six, Candelaria hit two from the line to trigger an 8-0 run as Candelaria added a layup off a steal and after Aubre Fortner tied the game at 16, she closed the run with a jumper at the 5:15 mark to push FLC to the 18-16 lead.

Herrera had the lead out to its largest of the night at seven when she stepped back and drilled a three near the top of the key for the 28-21 lead with under a minute to go before halftime. BHSU finished the final 50 seconds strong with a free throw and then a three-pointer by Julia Seamans sent FLC into halftime with a 28-25 lead.

A pair of free throws by Alyssa Adams and then a three-pointer by Herrera kept the FLC lead at 33-27 three minutes in. After BHSU fought back to tie at 33, a Yocky jumper kept the Skyhawks in front. A layup by Jordan Carter and then a jumper by Herrera kept FLC with a five-point lead with four minutes to go in the third quarter.

The Yellow Jackets reeled off the next six points to regain the lead before a two from the line by Adams vaulted FLC to a 43-42 lead entering the final quarter.
FLC stretched the lead to two when Candelaria tallied a three-point-play for the 46-44 lead. BHSU answered with a three-pointer and then went on a 6-0 run to take a 50-46 lead. The Skyhawks came right back to knot the score at 50 when Candelaria drove for another layup and then on a weird play near the sideline, the Yellow Jackets lost the ball off the official, who is in play and Candelaria alertly picked it up and went in for the uncontested layup to tie the game at 50 with 4:46 to play.

Out of a BHSU timeout, the Yellow Jackets scored the next four points before a Fortner jumper at the 2:16 mark trimmed the deficit back to two. BHSU continued to come up with big plays with Seamans driving in for a layup and after a missed three by FLC, Morgan Ham, who scored 19 points in the second half, converted a three-point-play to open a 59-52 lead with just 1:24 remaining.

The closest FLC would get the rest of the way was eight with 20 seconds to play when Candelaria hit a three off an assist by Alyssa Yocky.

Candelaria ended up going 5-8 from the field, 1-3 from three and 3-4 at the foul line. She also grabbed two rebounds and added three steals. Herrera sunk a pair of three-pointers, pulled down five rebounds and dished out three assists. Yocky added nine points and Adams chipped in eight. FLC went 19-59 (32) from the field, 4-22 (18) from three and 13-15 (87) at the foul line.

Ham tallied a game-high 23 points to lead Black Hills State, while also grabbing seven rebounds. Seamans added 17 points, with four three-pointers and Wientjes chipped in 13 points. The Yellow Jackets went 20-50 (40) from the field, 10-19 (53) from three and 15-21 (71) at the foul line.

FLC will now be off for the Christmas Break before returning to action on New Year's Eve at 1 p.m. at home against Northern New Mexico inside Whalen Gym.
