Women’s Basketball Returns From Break to Host Eagles for New Year’s Eve

DURANGO, Colo. – Following the Christmas Break, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team returns to action for the first time since Dec. 16 when they will face Northern New Mexico in a New Year's Eve matchup starting at 1 p.m. inside Whalen Gym.

This will be the second time this season that the two teams have matched up with FLC (5-5) having rolled to a 94-46 victory back on Nov. 16 against Northern New Mexico in Durango. The Skyhawks won every quarter in the earlier matchup, scoring at least 19 in each quarter. Seven players scored at least eight points, with Alyssa Yocky leading the way with a double-double going for 15 points and 10 rebounds. Sydney Candelaria added 13 points and eight rebounds, Jordan Carter chipped in 12 and MorningRose Tobey rounded out the four in double-figures with 11. FLC shot 43 percent (33-76) from the field, 9-21 (43) from three and 19-24 (79) at the charity stripe. The Skyhawks forced 26 turnovers and held Northern New Mexico to just a 27 percent shooting clip (16-59) and 2-15 (13) from three. Last time out, FLC fell just short against #18 Black Hills State, 65-55, and win the game before that over South Dakota Mines, 62-44. Candelaria had a big game against the Yellow Jackets with 14 points and three steals. Herrera added 11 points.

On the season FLC is averaging 70 points and allowing 58 points, making 39 percent from the field and holding opponents to a 35 percent clip. The same five starters have started all 10 games this season in Yocky, Carter, Kayla Herrera, Candelaria and Alyssa Adams. Yocky leads the team in scoring at 12.8 points per game, along with a team-best 7.6 rebounds per contest. She adds 19 steals, 25 assists, five blocks and is shooting 53 percent (47-88) from the field, including a 6-12 (50) effort from long range. Carter is second on the team in scoring at 11.3 per game, while grabbing 6.0 rebounds. She has sent back five blocks, come away with seven steals and dished out 12 assists, while shooting 49 percent (52-107) from the field. Herrera leads the team in assists with 32 while adding 16 steals, five blocks, 10.5 points and 5.6 rebounds. She's connected on 15 three-pointers this year. Candelaria is just under 10 points per game at 9.7, adding 3.9 rebounds, a team-best 20 steals, two blocks and 15 assists. Adams is at 5.1 points per game, with 2.4 rebounds, 13 assists, four steals and two blocks. Aubre Fortner is fifth on the team in scoring at 5.2 per game and adds 2.6 rebounds, five steals, two blocks and five assists. Tobey adds 4.5 points and Tanisha Begay is at four points per contest.

FLC ranks high in the conference and nationally in several categories including second in the RMAC and 34th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.11), first in the RMAC and 98th nationally in assists (147), third in the RMAC and 93rd nationally in assists per game (14.7), fifth in the RMAC in defensive rebounds per game (27), second in the RMAC and 35th nationally in fewest turnovers (132), third in the RMAC and 26th nationally in field goal percentage on defense (34.9), third in the RMAC in free throws made (131), second in the RMAC and 54th nationally in offensive rebounds per game (15), fourth in the RMAC in rebounds (413), second in the RMAC and 71st nationally in rebounds per game (41.30), third in the RMAC and 40th nationally in scoring defense (57.9), second in the RMAC and 49th nationally in scoring margin (12.8), fourth in the RMAC and 96th nationally in scoring offense (70.7), first in the RMAC and 53rd nationally in steals (108), second in the RMAC and 47th nationally in steals per game (10.8), fifth in the RMAC in three point field goal defense (29.7), first in the RMAC and 19th nationally in turnover margin (6.70), second in the RMAC and 66th nationally in turnovers forced (19.90) and second in the RMAC and 22nd nationally in turnovers per game (13.2).

Individually, Herrera is ninth in the RMAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.00), seventh in the RMAC in assists (32) and 10th in the RMAC in assists per game (3.2). Carter is fifth in the RMAC in field goal percentage (48.6) and 10th in the RMAC in field goals made (52). Yocky is third in the RMAC and 101st nationally in offensive rebounds per game (3), fifth in the RMAC in both rebounds (76) and rebounds per game (7.6), sixth in the RMAC and 99th nationally in free throw percentage (82.4), seventh in the RMAC in steals (19) and eighth in the RMAC in steals per game (1.90). Candelaria is fourth in the RMAC in steals (20) and third in the RMAC in steals per game (2.0).

Northern New Mexico is 1-13 this season having picked up and opening season win over the University of the Southwest (64-50). The Eagles have lost 13-straight since winning that game to start the season and will face Bellevue and Hastings in Nebraska before arriving in Durango. Before the break, Northern New Mexico fell at the University of La Verne in California (78-67).

So far this season, the Eagles average 53 points and allow 80 points, making 35 percent from the field and allowing a 44 percent to the opposition. Secody leads the team in scoring at 11.4 points per game, with Cordova adding 9.5 and Muniz at 9.0.
