Elemen Leads Skyhawks to 6-5 Win

ST. GEORGE, Utah – February 9, 2018 – Junior Angelique Elemen hit a walk-off home run Friday afternoon to lead the Fort Lewis College softball team to their first win of the season.  The Skyhawks defeated Dominican University, 6-5, in their first game of the day.  FLC dropped an 11-3 decision in five innings in the night cap against Hawaii-Hilo.
 
Against Dominican, Denae Fisher put the Skyhawks on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third inning when she singled up the middle to score Pillar Gutierrez. 
 
FLC added four more runs in the fourth inning.  Lauren Caldwell, Julia Roberts, Kellsi Peterson and Emily Selby each hit a double and Tristen Gilbert added a single to account for the Skyhawks five hits in the inning.  Roberts double drove home Gilbert and Peterson's double scored Roberts and Caldwell.  Peterson crossed home plate on Selby's double for the 5-0 lead.
 
Dominican started a comeback with one run each in the fifth and sixth innings.  Leading 5-2 entering the seventh inning, the Skyhawks allowed three runs on two hits and two errors to knot the game at 5-5.
 
In the seventh inning with one out, Elemen hit her second homerun of the season for the win.
 
Caldwell and Peterson recorded multiple hits (two) and eight Skyhawks finished with at least one hit.  As a team, the Skyhawks scored six runs on 10 hits.
 
Mandy Lorenson pitched a complete game with five hits and two earned runs while fanning nine batters.
 
Against UHH, Elemen hit a home run for the third straight game, giving FLC a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
 
UHH tied the game in the bottom of the second inning before Caldwell regained the lead for the Skyhawks in the third inning.  With two outs and two runners on base, Caldwell hit a double that drove in Elemen.
 
UHH accounted for 10 runs between the third and fourth innings to bolster their lead to 11-2.  Elemen added her second run batted in after she doubled to score Fisher for the Skyhawks third and final run of the game.
 
FLC (1-7) will played their final two games of the DSU Classic on Saturday.  The Skyhawks will play Northwest Nazarene at 10 a.m., and Western Washington at 3 p.m.
