DENVER – March 18, 2018 – Sunday's 3-1 win over Regis University in the series finale snapped a 12-game losing streak for the Fort Lewis College softball team. FLC fell in the first game on Sunday, 15-5 (five innings). The Skyhawks improve to 8-22 overall and 2-14 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
After a scoreless two innings by both teams, the Skyhawks took a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Allison Young reached base on single to centerfield, and then proceeded to steal second.
Denae Fisher batted Young home on a single to left field.
RU tied the game in the bottom of the third inning, 1-1.
Fort Lewis tagged on two more runs in the sixth inning. With bases loaded and no outs,
Kellsi Peterson was hit by a pitch that scored Fisher. The next batter,
McKenna Hefley, drew a walk that brought home the eventual game-winning run by
Robyn Hall. Hall entered the game as a pinch runner for
Lauren Caldwell who also drew a walk.
In the bottom of the seventh inning with two runners on base and no outs, the Skyhawks defense posted three straight outs to secure the 3-1 win.
Six different Skyhawks recorded a hit against the Rangers.
Kendra Keahbone allowed one run on three hits in the first four innings in the circle. She was relieved by
Mandy Lorenson who closed the game to earn the win. Lorenson struck out two batters while holding RU hitless.
Sunday's opening game started with nine runs in the first inning by the Rangers. Five of the Rangers runs were scored off of two homeruns.
After Regis took an 11-0 lead after two innings, the Skyhawks plated three runs in the third inning.
McKenna Hefley hit a triple to left centerfield that scored Peterson, Fisher and Young.
A three-run homerun in the bottom of the third inning extended the Rangers lead to 14-3.
Taylor Beaman hit a single down the right field line in the fifth inning that scored Peterson. Hefley would add the final run of the game when she scored on a wild pitch.
McKenna Hefley finished going 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and one run batted in. Peterson tallied one hit and scored two runs.
The Rangers accounted for 15 runs (10 earned) on 16 hits.
Fort Lewis will return home March 24-25 against Adams State University.
