COLORADO SPRINGS – April 15, 2018 – The Fort Lewis College softball team nearly took the series finale at University of Colorado Colorado Springs Sunday afternoon, falling 8-7 to the Mountain Lions. FLC lost a 14-5, five-inning decision in the first game on Sunday.
Trailing 7-5 to start the final inning,
McKenna Hefley hit a homerun to left field to score
Allison Young and tie the game at 7-7. The Mountain Lions ended the game with a walk-off double in the seventh inning.
Hefley's homerun in the seventh inning was her fourth of the season. She added a double and went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Denae Fisher hit two homeruns in the game and
Angelique Elemen also added a homerun. Fisher and Elemen hit back-to-back homeruns to lead off the fourth inning for the Skyhawks.
Fisher finished with three RBIs and two runs scored on two hits. Six of FLC's nine hits were extra base hits (two doubles, four homeruns).
Mandy Lorenson struck out eight batters in five and one-third innings in the circle. She allowed seven runs on five hits. Decker suffered the loss after pitching the final one and one-third inning, surrendering one run on two hits.
In the morning game, the Skyhawks trailed UCCS 12-0 before scoring five runs in the fifth inning. FLC scored all five runs from two homeruns. Hefley's homerun brought home
Pilar Gutierrez, followed by
Kaitlyn Barlow's first career home run, a three-run blast that scored
Tristen Gilbert and
Angelique Elemen.
Barlow accounted for three RBIs and one run scored, and Hefley tallied two runs batted in and a run scored.
FLC (13-32, 7-24 RMAC) will play their final home series of the season April 21-22 against Colorado State-Pueblo.
