Softball Breaks FLC Game Records in 18-17 Win

AZTEC, N.M. – April 8, 2018 – The Fort Lewis College softball team broke the school record for more hits in a game (25), most at-bats in a game (48), and tied for most singles in a game (18) in an 18-17 win Sunday afternoon against New Mexico Highlands at the Aztec Tiger Sports Complex in Aztec, N.M.  The Skyhawks earned their first sweep of a doubleheader on Sunday after defeating the Cowgirls in Sunday's first game, 8-1, followed by the 18-17 win in the series finale.
 
The wins, which also helped the Skyhawks win their first series of the conference season, improve their record to 13-29 overall and 7-21 in league games.
 
The Skyhawks scored at least two runs in every inning after being held scoreless in the first inning.  FLC plated five runs in the fifth inning to take a 14-10 lead.  Trailing 17-16 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Denae Fisher hit a double to left center to score Julia Roberts, knotting the game at 17-17.    With two outs and Fisher on third base, Tristen Gilbert hit a single to left field for the game-winning run.
 
Nine Skyhawks recorded hits, all of which were multiple hits for FLC.  Lauren Caldwell, McKenna Hefley and Kellsi Peterson each posted four hits.
 
Hefley went 4-for-6 with one run scored.  Caldwell and Peterson each went 4-for-5.  Caldwell added five runs scored and one run batted in, and Peterson tallied three runs scored and four runs batted. 
 
Kaitlyn Barlow chipped in four runs batted in on two hits, and Gilbert accumulated three runs batted in and one run scored on two hits.
 
Fisher, Caldwell (two), Taylor Beaman and Barlow hit for at least one double.  Fisher added a homerun, her third in four games, and Hefley tallied a triple.
 
Kassidy Trumbo pitched the first four innings, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits.  Kelly Decker pitched the final three innings, surrendering three earned runs on six hits.
 
In Sunday's first game of the doubleheader, Madelynne Blood-Smyth hit a single to drive in Caldwell from second base to give FLC a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
 
Blood-Smyth added two more runs batted in in the fourth inning when she hit her first career homerun.  She drove in Caldwell again to give the Skyhawks a 3-0 lead.
 
FLC extended their lead to 7-1 in the fifth inning with four runs.  With two outs and the bases loaded, Blood-Smyth hit a single to score Tristen GilbertKaitlyn Barlow followed with a three-run triple, scoring Blood-Smyth, Kellsi Peterson and Caldwell. 
 
The Skyhawks added an insurance run in the sixth inning on McKenna Hefley's double that brought in Allison Young for the final run.
 
Blood-Smyth finished the game going 3-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored.  Barlow added three runs batted in on two hits, and Caldwell scored three times.
 
Mandy Lorenson notched her second straight win of the series, pitching all seven innings and allowing no earned runs on six hits while fanning 11 batters.
 
Fort Lewis will travel to UCCS April 14-15 for a four-game series.
