Volleyball Concludes Westminster Classic Against Lubbock Christian and MSU Mankato

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – The last two matches at the Westminster Classic were going to be tough challenges for the Fort Lewis College volleyball team, as both Lubbock Christian and Minnesota State were off to strong starts to the season. The Skyhawks battled, but fell by scores of 3-0 in both matches Saturday.

In the first match of the day, FLC (0-4) faced a regional opponent in Lubbock Christian (5-2). The Chaps ended up taking the match by set scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 25-19. Haley Christiansen continued her strong start to the season with 10 more kills. Bailey Longacre added seven. Bella Valdez added 15 assists, while on defense Longacre, Noni Thomas and Katherine Potter all had a solo block. Christiansen made it a double-double with 19 digs.

LCU used a quick start out of the gate going on a 7-1 run in the first frame. Kendra Swackenberg and Christiansen added kills to help bring the deficit back to four at 11-7. The Skyhawks kept coming and pulled to within two at 20-18 on another kill by Swackenberg. Following a 4-0 run by the Chaps, FLC fought off set point for a little while with Christiansen collecting a kill and an attack error by LCU, before an attack error by FLC pushed LCU to the first set win at 25-20.

It was a mirror image of the first set with LCU quickly moving out to an 8-2 lead in the second set. A Thomas kill and a pair of attack errors had FLC back to within three at 9-6. A solo block by Thomas had the spread at five at 15-10, but that would be as close as the Skyhawks could get the rest of the set with LCU claiming the second set 25-15 to move out to a 2-0 match lead.

Valdez, Christiansen and Maddie LeBlanc all tallied points to help FLC out to a 4-2 lead in the third set. An 8-1 run followed for LCU to move them out to a 10-5 advantage. Christiansen put down a pair of kills midway through the set to help keep FLC to within two, 12-10. Another Christiansen kill at 16-14 had FLC as close as they could get the rest of the way as LCU closed the set on 9-5 run for the 25-19 third set win and 3-0 match victory.

Lauren Zoller led LCU with 15 kills. Bradi Marshall added 37 assists, while on defense, Jaiden Kennedy had 2.5 blocks and Kelsie French added 27 digs.

In the second match of the day, FLC came close in both the first and third sets against MSU Mankato (6-1) before the Mavericks won in straight sets 25-21, 25-13, 25-21. Christiansen was just short of another double-double with nine kills and eight digs. Freshman Jacalyn Sharko tallied eight kills. Swackenberg had 13 assists and Valdez added 10. On defense, LeBlanc had two solo blocks and Megan Graefe had 11 digs.

Christiansen had a couple of early kills to help jump start FLC to a 6-4 lead in the first set. A pair of Sharko kills and then a kill by Tye Wedhorn kept the Skyhawks cruising at 11-9. Following a run by MSU Mankato to move them out to a 13-11 advantage, FLC pushed back to a 15-14 lead off of a kill by Christiansen and a service ace by Sharko. Kills y Longacre and Ohiyah Shirley had FLC to within one at 21-20 and again at 22-21, before the Mavericks ended the set on a 3-0 spurt for a 25-21 set win.

MSU Mankato started the second set on a 9-2 run and then watched FLC work their way back to within four at 12-8 on a kill by Thomas. From that point on, the Mavericks kept pushing and went on to claim the set at 25-13.

A LeBlanc solo block and Sharko kill around a few errors helped ignite FLC to a 4-1 lead in the third set. Longacre and Thomas combined for a block to keep the lead at four, 10-6. After MSU Mankato came back to tie and then jumped out to an 18-12 lead. Down 20-14, FLC used a 4-0 to get back into the set with points from Longacre, Valdez and Christiansen. After staying within two at 21-19 on another kill by Christiansen, MSU Mankato scored four of the final six points for the 25-21 third set win and 3-0 match victory.

Morgan Olson led the Mavericks with 19 kills and hit .552. Micayla Porter had 27 assists, while Ashton Lee has two blocks and Mara Quam with 14 digs.

FLC will now return home this coming week to open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play starting on Friday night at 7 p.m. against Chadron State inside Whalen Gym.
