Longacre, Sharko Pace Volleyball at UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Bailey Longacre and Jacalyn Sharko each recorded six kills as the Fort Lewis College volleyball team went point-for-point with UC-Colorado Springs in the first set before the Mountain Lions grabbed the tight opening set on their way to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-9) Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Friday night.

FLC (1-6, 1-2 RMAC) came out swinging jumping out to a 6-2 lead as UCCS (3-9, 1-3 RMAC) committed a trio of errors to push the advantage to four. Tye Wedhorn and Sharko each posted kills to tie the set at 13 and then again at 14. UCCS then used a 6-1 run to push in front 20-15. Wedhorn later added another kill and following a few errors from UCCS, the Skyhawks were within four at 24-20 when an attack error by FLC ended the first set at 25-20 for UCCS.

Longacre and Bella Valdez posted back-to-back kills early in the second set to give FLC a 7-6 lead. After a run by the Mountain Lions, Sharko tallied a kill and then teamed with Longacre for a double-block to pull back to within two at 13-11. A Valdez kill around an error by the Mountain Lions had FLC as close as they could get the rest of the set at 19-15 as UCCS closed the second set on a 6-2 run for the 25-17 second set victory.

Haley Christiansen tallied a kill to even the third set at one. After that, UCCS got on a roll as they scored 16 of the next 18 points to take a 17-3 lead. Valdez and Christiansen added points down the stretch, but they couldn't erase the large deficit as UCCS claimed the third set 25-9 and took the match 3-0.

Outside of the kills from Longacre and Sharko, Valdez and Kendra Swackenberg had 10 assists apiece. Megan Graefe and Christiansen had eight digs each, while Longacre had two blocks.

Taylor Smith led the Mountain Lions with 16 kills, while Lauryn Shockley added 11. Raelynn Edge had 41 assists, Jordyn Kinsey tallied 10 digs and Edge sent back four blocks.

FLC will face #25 Colorado School of Mines tomorrow (Saturday) at 5 p.m. The Orediggers defeated Adams State, 3-0, earlier Friday night.
