Christiansen Paces Volleyball at #25 Colorado Mines

GOLDEN, Colo. -- #25 Colorado School of Mines has been one of the hottest teams out of the gate to start the season in the conference and they didn't let off the gas Saturday night. The Fort Lewis College volleyball team did their best to keep it close, but the Orediggers took the 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-16) Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory.

Haley Christiansen led the team or tied for the team lead in kills (6), service aces (2) and in digs (15).

FLC (1-7, 1-3 RMAC) posted nine kills over the first two sets and added eight in the third. Colorado Mines (11-2, 5-0 RMAC) hit at least .222 in every set and tallied kill numbers of 17 (twice) and 16 in the final set.

The Skyhawks moved out to a 3-1 lead in the first set behind a trio of errors by the Orediggers. A solo block by Bella Valdez and then another solo block by Bailey Longacre kept the set even at 10. A double-block by Christiansen and Longacre and then a kill by Longacre had FLC back to within two at 18-16. Colorado Mines closed strong as they tallied seven of the final 10 points to take the first set by a 25-19 score.

In the second set, Christiansen helped start a 4-0 run with a kill as she then spun in a pair of service aces around an Oredigger error to take the 4-2 lead. A Christiansen kill and another by Jacalyn Sharko pulled FLC back to within one at 12-11. A Christiansen kill and a service ace by Kendra Swackenberg brought FLC to within a point again at 14-13 when Colorado Mines went on a 11-5 run to close the set and take it 25-18.

The Skyhawks used a pair of early runs to pull to within two, as two attacking errors by the Orediggers had Colorado Mines holding a 9-7 lead. After a service error, Sharko added a kill to make it a 15-12 lead for Colorado Mines, but just like in the previous sets, the Orediggers began to take over. They scored the next five points and ended the set on a 10-4 run to take the third set, 25-16 and the match 3-0.

Sharko tied Christiansen in kills with six. Swackenberg had 10 assists, while on defense Megan Graefe was second behind Christiansen in digs with 10 and Longacre had three blocks, two solo.

Aby Tiesman led Colorado Mines in kills (13), service aces (2) and blocks (9). Drew Stokes had 44 assists and Elle Duis tallied 14 digs.

FLC will travel to Utah this coming week as they will play at Dixie State on Friday starting at 6 p.m. and then will have their rematch with Westminster the next day on Saturday at 4 p.m.
