Women’s Soccer Records Third Straight Shutout Against Adams State

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team has certainly made it hard for teams to score against them as of late. Behind another solid defensive performance, the Skyhawks tallied three goals on their way to posting their third straight shutout with a 3-0 victory against Adams State Sunday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

FLC (4-2-1, 3-0 RMAC) kept Adams State (2-5, 1-2 RMAC) to just seven total shots and none on goal. They were held to two shots in the first half. On the other side, the Skyhawks generated 12 shots, six in each half, with five on goal. Set pieces were key as FLC had four corner kicks to two for Adams State, as all three goals came off of corner kicks. Adams State committed 10 fouls to five for FLC.

The Skyhawks nearly got a goal right away when Britney Johnson broke in and chipped a shot that made a big bounce right in front of the goalie and went over her head and then hit the crossbar. Somehow on the way down it didn't cross the line and it remained scoreless just over a minute in.

Another rush was generated a few minutes later and after the Grizzlies were forced to kick the ball out, that setup a corner kick for Emma Patron. Patron hit a perfect ball into the box and Renee Terrell was there waiting to knock it in for the header goal near the left side of the box for the 1-0 FLC lead in the 13th minute. It was Terrell's third goal of the season.

FLC had a few more runs over the remainder of the half, but it stayed 1-0 at the break.

It was a quick start to the second half for FLC, as right away they generated a corner kick that was taken by Patron. Once again she served a perfect ball into the box and this time Johnson was waiting to knock it home for the header goal at the 49th minute and a 2-0 lead. It was her first goal of the season.

Over the next few minutes, Adams State generated a few chances, but after keeping the shutout going, FLC added one more goal in the 85th minute. Following a strong push, Courtney Wamboldt got two corner kicks within three minutes, with her second one being a perfect one right in the box to Katie Smith who collected the header goal and a 3-0 lead. It was Smith's second goal of the season.

Terrell and Johnson had three shots apiece, while Patron added two. Britt Blomso faced seven shots, but none on goal for her third straight shutout.

Carly Kading and Kendall Weld had two shots each for Adams State. In net, Corri Zaiger made two saves on five shots on goal and faced 12 total shots.

The four wins already equals last year's win total and the three conference victories is one away from matching last year's mark. This is the first time since 2012 that FLC has started out undefeated over the first three conference games. During that season, they went 2-0-1 against Colorado Mesa, Colorado Mines and Adams State. The last time they started 3-0 was in 2011 in which FLC won their first six conference games that season.

Following a homestand in which FLC went 4-1, they will now hit the road this coming week when they will play at nationally-ranked Colorado Mines on Friday at 5 p.m. and then close the trip on Sunday at Colorado Christian starting at 1 p.m.
