Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. -- Going against one of the top teams in the nation is never easy and after being tied midway through the first half, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team was right there. #5 Colorado Mines was able to tally a goal before half and another in the second half to take the 3-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Friday afternoon.
Kaylee Mickens was huge in net for FLC (4-3-1, 3-1 RMAC) as she came on in relief of an injured Britt Blomso in the 12th minute. She then promptly made 12 saves and only allowed two goals over the final 78-plus minutes of the match.
The Skyhawks had a pair of shots in the first half, both going on goal. Colorado Mines (8-1-1, 5-0 RMAC) put up 31 shots, with 15 on net. They had 11 in the first half and 20 in the second half. The Orediggers held a 7-1 edge on corner kicks and FLC committed 12 fouls to two for Colorado Mines.
It was a quick start for Colorado Mines as they recorded a goal in the seventh minute when Peyton Sanders knocked home the goal on a cross by Jennifer Kendall.
It didn't take FLC long to respond as following a corner kick by Emma Patron, Britney Johnson was able to collect the rebound and knock it home for the tying goal in the 11th minute. It was Johnson's second goal of the season.
It looked like it might go to the half tied, but Nicole LaTourette gave Colorado Mines a 2-1 lead when she scored in the 35th minute.
The Orediggers closed the scoring in the second half as Emily Townsend scored in the 62nd minute to provide the final margin of 3-1.
Johnson ended up tallying both shots on goal for the Skyhawks.
FLC will return to action on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. against Colorado Christian. The Cougars picked up a 2-1 win over Adams State earlier on Friday.
