Beasley Tallies 25 Points Versus RMAC-Leading Orediggers

DURANGO, Colo. – Backed by Marquel Beasley's 25 points, the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team made a push in the second half. After fighting back to tie the game with seven minutes remaining, Colorado School of Mines used strong free throw shooting and a pair of big baskets to hold off the Skyhawks for the 92-79 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday night inside Whalen Gym.

The Orediggers (12-3, 9-0) winners of 11 straight games following a 1-3 start, continued to make key plays down the stretch to remain undefeated in RMAC play. Colorado School of Mines came into the game receiving votes in the latest NABC Poll.

After falling behind by 10 at halftime, FLC (7-8, 2-7 RMAC) began to make their move out of the locker rooms. Otas Iyekekpolor started the half by hitting two from the line. Following a basket by the Orediggers, Iyekekpolor added two more from the line before a Wyatt Hayes long ball had the deficit down to five.

FLC kept the run going with a Iyekekpolor layup off his own steal and then a jumper by Beasley left it a one-point game at 36-35. The Skyhawks worked their way back to a tie game at 42 when Beasley converted a three-point-play.

Colorado School of Mines pushed the lead back out as high as five, just to watch the Skyhawks come right back with Beasley sinking four straight free throws to knot the game at 57-all. Following two Will Wittman free throws helped bring FLC back to within four, Colorado School of Mines used a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Beasley and Hayes had FLC off to a strong start early with a pair of baskets for the 4-0 lead two minutes in. Still in front by four on a jumper by Beasley, the Orediggers worked their way back into the lead for the first time after using a 10-1 run for a 12-7 lead.

Brenden Boatwright trimmed the deficit back to three and got to within two on a three-pointer by Will Wittman at the 10:38 mark. It looked like the Skyhawks might keep the deficit around five following two free throws from Boatwright with 1:30 remaining, but the Orediggers went on a 5-0 run to close the half and take a 34-24 lead into the break.

Beasley led four in double-figures as he went 8-17 from the field and 9-13 from the line for his 25 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds, added a block and two steals in 35 minutes. Iyekekpolor posted 13 points, including a 7-7 effort from the foul line. He also grabbed four rebounds, had a block and three steals. Alex Semadeni went for 12 points, pulled down eight rebounds, had four assists and three steals in 35 minutes. Wittman rounded out the four in double-figures with 10 points. FLC went 23-61 (38) from the field, 6-23 (26) from three and 27-32 (84) at the foul line.

Colorado School of Mines ended up setting an RMAC record for free throws going 24-24 on the night. They also shot well from the field making 32-60 (53) but struggled from three going 4-14 (29). Mason Baker led the way with 27 points, going 8-12 from the floor. Austin Means added 17, Ben Clare with 13 and Ben Sonnefeld chipped in 12.

The Skyhawks held the advantage on points off turnovers (18-11), were even in second-chance points (13-13) and in fastbreak points (15-10).

FLC will remain at home this coming week when they will face Western Colorado and Colorado Mesa this Friday and Saturday starting at 7:30 p.m. both nights inside Whalen Gym.
