Beasley Goes for Seventh 20-Point Game of Season at Cougars

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Marquel Beasley tallied 23 points on 7-13 shooting, while Otas Iyekekpolor tallied 19 points Saturday night at Colorado Christian. The Cougars used a late second half run to pull away from the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team to collect the 89-77 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory.

Outside of Beasley's solid 23-point game, Iyekekpolor went 8-12 from the field for is 19 points, while pulling down six rebounds, two assists and another block. Alex Semadeni reached double-figures with 13 points, while playing 38 minutes. Will Wittman just missed double-figures with eight points on 3-6 shooting, 2-4 from long range.

Colorado Christian (5-14, 3-10 RMAC) used a strong shooting night both from the field connecting on 33-61 (54) and from three making 10-20 (50). They also went 13-14 (93) from the foul line. FLC (9-10, 4-9 RMAC) shot well from the field making 27-58 (47) but struggled from three hitting 3-17 (18). They also added a 20-28 (71) effort from the charity stripe.

Iyekekpolor opened the scoring 12 seconds in with a jumper off an assist by Semadeni. The Skyhawks had the lead out to four nearly three minutes in when Iyekekpolor hit a three and Semadeni connected on a jumper in the paint for a 9-5 lead.

The Cougars answered with a 7-0 spurt to push out to a 14-11 lead six minutes in. FLC fought back to tie several times, including a three-pointer by Wittman evened the score at 26-all with 7:16 to play before halftime. Colorado Christian used another 7-0 run in just over a minute to go in front 33-26.

After falling behind by as many as eight, the Skyhawks closed the final minute of the half strong with Beasley and Brenden Boatwright hitting free throws to leave the Cougars with just a one-point lead at 39-38.

Semadeni kept the run going right out of the break with a layup off the fastbreak 39 seconds in to push FLC back in front by one. Colorado Christian again came back and led by as many as six before Beasley hit two free throws, AJ Sparks hit a layup and then a dunk by Beasley capped the 6-0 run to tie the game at 63 with 7:49 to play.

A minute later, the Skyhawks regained the lead when Sparks hit a jumper in the paint and a dunk by Iyekekpolor had FLC looking at a 67-65 lead. Later, Beasley tied the game at 69 with 4:35 to play on a tip-in just to watch Colorado Christian go on a 20-8 run down the stretch to take the 89-77 victory.

FLC led on second-chance points (14-9), bench points (20-18), were even in points in the paint (40-40) and there weren't many fastbreak points to be had with FLC holding a slight 2-0 advantage. CCU held a 21-13 lead on points off turnovers.

Jeremiah Hanson led four Cougars in double-figures with 23 points, he also grabbed seven rebounds. Stefan Hackethal tallied 17, Jake Hornick added 16 and Braxton Tucker finished with 10 points.

FLC will remain on the road this coming week as they will travel to Utah to face Dixie State Friday and Westminster on Saturday with both games starting at 7:30 p.m. Dixie State is 7-6 in RMAC play, while Westminster is 5-8 in conference action.
