Yocky Posts Double-Double With 12 Points and 10 Rebounds at Colorado Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Kayla Herrera and Jordan Carter combined for 28 points, while Alyssa Yocky added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds Saturday night at Colorado Christian. The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team came back to tie late in the fourth quarter before the Cougars were able to pull away for the 70-66 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory.

Herrera went 6-13 from the field, along with four rebounds, three assists and three steals for her 14 points. Carter added a 7-9 effort from the field, with four rebounds and a steal for her 14 points. Yocky went 6-9 from the field and of her 10 rebounds, nine came on the defensive end. She also dished out one assist and had five steals. Kaitlyn Romero just missed double-figures with eight points.

FLC (8-11, 4-9 RMAC) started strong outscoring Colorado Christian (9-10, 7-6 RMAC) in both the first quarter (15-14) and second quarter (19-14) to take a 34-28 lead at halftime. The Cougars used a big third quarter, holding a 18-10 advantage and then held a slight 24-22 edge in the final frame. The Skyhawks held a 31-26 advantage on rebounds, but Colorado Christian took advantage in the paint with a 40-18 points edge.

Yocky opened the scoring off the fastbreak 46 seconds in with a layup off her own steal. The lead stretched to five following a three-pointer by Romero. FLC kept the lead at five on several occasions, with the last in the first quarter coming at the 4:07 mark on a jumper by Carter in the paint.

The Cougars fought back to pull to within one at 15-14 at the end of the quarter. It turned into a 6-0 run for Colorado Christian after opening the second quarter on a 4-0 run to move out to a 18-15 lead. Down one at 24-23, FLC went on a lengthy 9-0 run to open an eight-point lead. Hanna Valencia started the run with a layup. Herrera added a three and after a layup by Carter, she closed the run with another layup at the 1:47 mark to push FLC to a 32-24 lead.

Colorado Christian chipped two points off the lead over the final few minutes leaving the Skyhawks with a 34-28 lead at halftime.

Carter opened the scoring in the second half just over a minute in to keep the lead at eight. After a run by the Cougars, Aubre Fortner helped keep the Skyhawks in front by six after back-to-back jumpers. Following a layup by Yocky kept FLC with a five-point lead with two minutes to go in the quarter, Colorado Christian closed the third on a 7-0 run to take a 46-44 lead into the final frame.

A Romero three and a layup by Carter 38 seconds apart moved FLC back out to a 49-48 lead a minute into the fourth. After falling behind by five on a few occasions, the Skyhawks fought back to tie the game at 64 when Romero hit a layup and Sydney Candelaria drilled a three-pointer at the 1:09 mark to even the score.

Out of a timeout, Colorado Christian went to Jordan Baer and she delivered the clutch shot with a jumper in the paint to move the Cougars to a 66-64 lead with 43 seconds to play. FLC missed on a three-point attempt on their ensuing possession and Colorado Christian was able to get the defensive rebound with 14 seconds left. Forced to foul, FLC sent Davenport Brantley to the foul line with seven seconds to play. Brantley hit both to move the lead to four at 68-64. Herrera went the length of the floor to hit a layup with five seconds left to trim the deficit to two. The Skyhawks again had to foul with four seconds to play and Brantley stepped up and hit both to secure the 70-66 win for the Cougars.

FLC shot well from the field making 28-55 (51) but struggled from three hitting on 4-17 (24) and went 6-11 (55) at the charity stripe.

Sarah McGinley powered Colorado Christian with 27 points on 10-15 shooting. Baer added 16 points and Marie Tsoungui rounded out the three Cougars in double-figures with 10 points. CCU went 25-53 (47) from the field, 6-17 (35) from three and a perfect 14-14 at the foul line.

The Skyhawks will remain on the road this coming week as they will travel to Utah to face Dixie State on Friday and Westminster on Saturday with both games starting at 5:30 p.m. Dixie State is 6-7 in RMAC play, while Westminster is 12-1 in conference action.
