Candelaria’s 20-Point, Eight-Rebound Effort Sends Women’s Basketball Past Dixie State

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Sydney Candelaria went for a game-high 20 points and added eight rebounds, going 8-12 from the field to send the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team to a 66-60 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Friday night against Dixie State.

The 20 points was a season-high and is her new career-high, breaking the high of 17 she set on two different occasions. FLC (9-11, 5-9 RMAC) held six-point advantages in both the first and second quarters to take a 12-point halftime lead.

Kayla Herrera opened the scoring 28 seconds in with a three-pointer. Candelaria got her night going at the 8:33 mark when she dialed long distance. Following a layup by Jordan Carter, Candelaria closed a 10-0 run to start the game with two from the line.

It took over five minutes for Dixie State (10-8, 6-8 RMAC) to get on the board and when they did, they answered with a 9-0 run to pull back to within a point. Alyssa Yocky and Candelaria combined for four points down the stretch to give FLC a 16-10 lead through the first 10 minutes.

Back-to-back baskets from Abigail Jensen near the midway point of the second quarter jumped the lead out to 12 at 24-12. A Tanisha Begay three-pointer and a layup by Candelaria right before halftime kept the lead at 12, 31-19, at halftime.

Despite a few runs by the Trailblazers, the Skyhawks kept answering and had the lead up to 13 at one point in the third quarter when Begay collected a defensive rebound and hit a jumper at the 1:06 mark. Dixie State closed the quarter with a layup by Morgan Myers to keep FLC with a 48-37 lead entering the final quarter.

Yocky opened the scoring in the fourth a minute in hitting a layup. After Dixie State had the deficit in single digits, Candelaria continued her career night sinking another three-pointer near the midway point to move back in front by 12.

Still holding a 10-point lead with 2:29 to play, Dixie State made one last run to make things interesting. A three-pointer and a pair of layups cut the lead to three with 34 seconds to play. After FLC split a pair from the line to go back ahead by four, the Trailblazers went for a big three-point attempt that missed and Herrera secured the rebound. She would be fouled and would also split the free throws to move the lead out to five with 18 seconds to play.

Following a turnover, Hanna Valencia hit two from the line to move back in front by six with 15 seconds to play. Dixie State hit a three-pointer on the next trip down, but after two free throws by Aubre Fortner, the Skyhawks were in the clear and claimed the 66-60 victory.

Outside of the big game by Candelaria, Yocky and Fortner tallied nine points apiece. Herrera also added eight points. Candelaria and Herrera added four steals apiece as FLC forced 20 turnovers and held the advantage on second chance points (8-5), and bench points (25-12). FLC went 24-54 (44) from the field, 5-17 (29) from three and 13-16 (81) at the foul line.

Mariah Martin led Dixie State with 16 points, while Ali Franks added 15 and London Pavlica with 10. The Trailblazers went 24-51 (47) from the field, 6-20 (30) from three and 6-8 (75) at the foul line.

FLC will close their four-game road swing tomorrow (Saturday) night when they will head north to Salt Lake City to face Westminster starting at 5:30 p.m. The Griffins defeated Adams State 74-58 earlier Friday.
