Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | David Wilson, Assistant AD-Communications

Fort Lewis falls on the road to No. 1 UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team faced off against the No. 1 ranked team in the country on Friday evening, falling by the final score of 5-0 on the road against the undefeated University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Mountain Lions.

Friday's matchup against the nation's best was an experience Fort Lewis head coach Damian Clarke said would serve as a key learning experience as the Skyhawks move forward.

"You have to look at these situations as opportunities. This was an opportunity to learn and play against No. 1 in the country. Only one team got to play against No. 1 on a Friday night and it was us," Clarke said. "Everybody got a chance to play against the best team in the country and we definitely continue to technically get smarter and smarter from this game as a program."

An early goal by UCCS (11-0 overall, 7-0 RMAC) put the Skyhawks (3-4-2 overall, 2-2-2 RMAC) behind the 8-ball early as the Mountain Lions netted the game's first score 1:23 into the contest.

UCCS would add two more first-half goals in the 26th minute and 42nd minute to take a 3-0 lead into the half, but were held off the score sheet the majority of the second half until the Mountain Lions tallied two late goals in the 82nd and 90th minute to round out the game's scoring.

"Obviously, when you're planning on making things difficult on UCCS by defending and you make a mistake in the first couple of minutes, it sort of changed the game plan a little quicker than we anticipated," Clarke said. "But if you look at the stats in the second half, the group played with less pressure and put six shot around the goal."

Fort Lewis finished with eight shots, four on goal, led by junior forward Corinne Sanderson with two. Senior forward Valerie Maestas and sophomore forward Skylar Byrnes each added scoring chances with one shot on goal.

In net, senior goalkeeper Britt Blomso made one save in her first-half action, while freshman Katherine Dunbabin stopped 4-of-6 opportunities in the second half. The duo faced a combined 19 shots on Friday and were two of a handful of strong performances for the Skyhawks.

"Once again, both goalkeepers made some huge save. We can't negate the work those kids have to do in a game like this," Clarke said. "I thought both goalkeepers performed really well, and we had some strong performances from girls like Britney Johnson. We put her in the midfield in the second half and I thought she did extremely well. Bailey Webster also performed well and did a very good job of giving us chances to move the ball forward."

Fort Lewis will now turn its attention toward a tough Sunday matchup against Metropolitan State University of Denver, set for 1 p.m. at the Regency Athletic Complex.

"Metro is a team that is much more talented and better than their record. I think they are the best team in the country that is 3-6," Clarke said. "I think our hands will be full again, but I think we're excited to keep our heads up and attack that game on Sunday."
