Late goal lifts Metro State to a 1-0 win over Fort Lewis

DENVER, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team closed out its weekend road trip with a 1-0 loss to Metropolitan State University of Denver on Sunday.

"Metro State is probably one of the better teams under .500 in the country," said Fort Lewis College head coach, Damian Clarke. "I think we played extremely well and made things difficult on them. I can't complain. Our team keeps fighting hard and getting better. Results are guide posts and you learn from them, try to figure out how you can be better the next game."

The Roadrunners (5-6-2 overall, 4-2-2 RMAC) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal late in the second half when Bry Sanchez buried a shot from 12-feet out in the 77th minute.

Metro State finished with a 22-7 shots advantage, 6-4 in shots on goal, that didn't quite tell the whole story. The Skyhawks (3-5-2 overall, 2-3-2 RMAC), despite the final shots totals, were able to create a handful of good chances Sunday, none better than senior forward Bailey Webster's chance at the 73:34 mark.

"The game was definitely more wide open than the final stats show. In the second half, I thought we created the most dangerous scoring chance of the game other than the goal that was scored," Clarke said.  "McKenna Thompson put a great ball behind the back line to Bailey, who got off a hard shot on goal. We all stood up thinking it was 1-0."

Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, Metro State's goalkeeper Erica Torres was able to get just enough of Webster's shot to make the save.

Just a little over three minutes later, the Roadrunners received their goal from Sanchez to take the 1-0 lead; the lone blemish on the stat line for FLC defense and senior goalkeeper Britt Blomso.

Blomso stopped five of the six shots on goal she faced and successfully navigated around seven corner kick opportunities by Metro State.

"Britt and the entire back line played extremely well," Clarke said. "Coming off of a really difficult Friday night (loss to No. 1 ranked UCCS), the kids responded well and didn't put their heads down. You can see a mentality with this team that is pretty awesome. They continue to fight."

The Skyhawks will look to build off Sunday's positives as they now prepare for a four-game home stand, starting at 3 p.m. Friday against Westminster College (5-3-2 overall, 2-3-1 RMAC), that will be crucial as teams jockey for position leading up to the RMAC Tournament.

"We have to get a result out of these next three games I think so we won't be dependent on other people," Clarke said. "If we can get a result out of these next three games, I think we can go into the final three games with a pretty realistic chance of being able to control our own fate."
