FLC football falls 17-10 on the road to Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College football team fell 17-10 on the road to rival Colorado Mesa University on Saturday, dropping to 3-3 overall on the season and 3-3 in the RMAC.

After holding a 3-0 halftime lead in the first half, courtesy of a 44-yard field goal from sophomore kicker Beau McCannon with five seconds remaining the second quarter.

Colorado Mesa (3-3 overall, 3-3 RMAC) answered back in the middle of the third quarter as quarterback Hayden Bollinger scampered in for a two-yard score with 7:27 remaining in the third quarter.

Fort Lewis would briefly take a 10-7 lead at the 3:53 mark of the third quarter when junior quarter back Erik Ornduff found redshirt freshman Zach Russell, who capped off the Skyhawks' eight-play, 90-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown reception.

Colorado Mesa tied the score at 10-10 with 12:46 remaining on a 37-yard field goal by Lucas Ruiz-Diaz, then pushed across what would prove to be the game-winning touchdown with 8:01 remaining on a 48-yard run by Isaac Maestas.

The Skyhawks had two more chances for the equalizer, but were forced to punt with 6:36 remaining and had a six-play drive end in an interception in the final minute to wrap up the 17-10 final.

Offensively, Ornduff passed for 212 yards on 23-of-43 attempts with one touchdown and one interception.

Redshirt sophomore running back Jeff Hansen paced the ground attack with 40 net yards on 18 attempts and senior wide receiver Parker Stahler recorded his first 100-yard game of the season, posting a team-high eight catches for 100 yards.

Defensively, junior defensive lineman Nathan Aguilar led all Skyhawks with nine total tackles, while senior linebacker Darrian Stickney posted eight tackles.

Aguilar and senior corner back Ka'Lonn Milton each added one sack apiece for Fort Lewis, as well. Sophomore safety Dakota Helms and senior linebacker Shane Wetzel each recorded interceptions of Colorado Mesa quarterback Hayden Bollinger.

Up next for the Skyhawks will be a 12 p.m. matchup on Saturday, October 19 against No. 11 ranked Colorado School of Mines out in Golden.
