Skyhawks extend winning streak to three with five-set victory over Colorado Christian

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College volleyball team has caught fire the past week, rattling off three straight victories, punctuated on Friday evening with a five-set thriller (22-25, 25-22, 25-20, 21-25 and 15-9) over Colorado Christian University.

For the Skyhawks (8-11 overall, 4-6 RMAC), the win was their second straight five-set victory after they took down Adams State to begin the week on Tuesday. Friday's victory was also the first win for Fort Lewis over the Cougars (6-12 overall, 2-8 RMAC) since 2010, snapping an 11-match losing streak.

"This is the best we've played throughout a night," said Fort Lewis head coach, Tricia Melfy. "We played with confidence, we played pretty consistently and when (the Cougars) were winning, we were making them play well. Tonight felt really good. We hadn't beaten these guys in eight years."

As they did in their victory over Adams State on Tuesday, the Skyhawks would rally back after dropping the first set, 25-22, to vault in front with set wins of 25-22 and 25-20 in succession.

Fort Lewis was sparked by the first career triple-double from freshman setter Payton Harmann, who tallied 10 kills and 14 digs to go with her 42 assists, while fellow freshman Kamryn Lopez also shined with 24 digs to help pace the FLC defense.

"Her triple-double was just remarkable. She's starting to play so smart," Melfy said of Harmann. "And with Kamryn, I'd have never known that she'd blossom this early. Payton's triple-double and then Kam's performance for big highlights for me (Friday)."

Senior outside hitter Ohiyah Shirley also produced a monster evening for FLC as her team-high 27 digs marked a career-high for Shirley, who capped her night with seven kills versus two errors.

Joining Harmann in double-figures, offensively, for the Skyhawks was senior middle blocker Bailey Longacre with 10 kills and five block assists, and junior outsider hitter Alexa Treguboff with a team-high 14 kills. Treguboff and freshman Joviana Romero rounded out the five FLC players with double-digit dig totals with 14 apiece.

Sophomore middle blocker Tye Wedhorn wasn't far behind with nine kills and a team-high eight block assists.

As a team, Fort Lewis posted new season highs in blocks (15 total) and digs (97).

Up next for the Skyhawks will be a date with No. 15 ranked Regis University, set for 5 p.m. Saturday inside Whalen Gymnasium.

"I'm just ready for us to go to battle," Melfy said of Saturday's showdown with the nationally ranked Rangers. "We have nothing to lose and we're starting to play better, so we'll put our best foot forward and see what happens (Saturday)."
