Skyhawks earn a point against No. 9 ranked Colorado School of Mines

DURANGO, Colorado — Not all ties are created equal.

For the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team, Friday's scoreless draw against the No. 9 ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers served as a big step forward for the Skyhawks, not to mention a crucial point against a nationally ranked foe inside the RMAC standings.

"At the end of the day, we needed to try to hold on and we did that. The kids were really, really tough in sticking to a game plan that sometimes was scary," said Fort Lewis head coach, Damian Clarke. "I thought we stayed composed enough to pass the ball when we could, be smart and not put ourselves in bad situations."

The final box score only tells part of the story for the Skyhawks (2-3-2 overall, 1-1-2 RMAC) as the visiting Orediggers (8-1-1 overall, 4-0-1 RMAC) won the shots battle (16-4), 10-2 in shots on goal, and had a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks as the majority of the game was played in FLC's half of the field.

Limiting the quality of those chances was the priority for the Skyhawks' defense en route to posting the team's second shutout of 2019.

"Our midfielders did an extremely great job of negotiating Mines' attacking players and I thought our shape did a really good job of keeping them outside of us," Clarke said. "If you can keep teams from playing down the middle of your defense, it's really hard to get off shots that are dangerous. We decided they were going to beat us with a cross and a header, or a shot from 30 yards out, if they were going to beat us."

Fort Lewis goalkeepers Britt Blomso and Katherine Dunbabin made sure that didn't happen as the duo each finished with five saves apiece on Friday.

Blomso, the senior out of Shoreline, Washington, started the game and recorded all five of her saves in the first half. Dunbabin then got the nod to start the second half, and manned the goal in each overtime period, to post a clean sheet in her 65 minutes.

"Both our goalkeepers were obviously phenomenal and were up to the task (Friday)," Clarke said. "I think we have a fantastic competition between the two. I think part of (playing both goalkeepers) was to keep them hungry and keep competing. We can't burn Katie's year by not playing her. She has to get time because she deserves it."

Another key piece to the Skyhawks' success, defensively, was the work of sophomore Katie Smith, a First-Team All-RMAC defender last season, who was moved to the center midfielder position on Friday.

"We moved her from center-back to the defensive midfielder position for the majority of the game and Katie did a phenomenal job," Clarke said. "I also thought Megan Trent stepped up (Friday), as did Ashley Strader and Chloe Chapman. There was some great things shown by a lot of players today."

With one point in hand, the Skyhawks will now hunt three points on Sunday in a 12 p.m. matchup against Colorado Christian University to close out their Homecoming Weekend.

"We were desperate for a shutout (Friday) and to gain some confidence." Clarke said. "I think the task on Sunday will be another tough one and not a game we'll overlook. Colorado Christian is going to press us high and make us find ways to build out. Both teams will be desperate to get points."
