Patron's two goals lift Skyhawks to thrilling Homecoming victory over Colorado Christian

DURANGO, Colorado — Staring at 35 yards of grass in front of her, 1:02 remaining on the game clock, and the possibility of her team heading to overtime, Fort Lewis College senior Emma Patron uncorked a shot that turned Sunday's Homecoming matchup against Colorado Christian University on its head.

Patron knew the outcome long before the ball ever touched nylon.

"I got the ball in the center and just thought 'I'm going to go for it,'" Patron said. "I've been practicing that shot in training, those chipping shots, and I saw that the goalie was playing out and thought 'I've got this.' I usually take our corner kicks, so I have practice with those loft balls. When it left my foot, I thought 'Oh my gosh, that's in!'"

Patron's strike was not just a thing of beauty, but her second goal of the game also proved to be the difference maker in the Skyhawks' 2-1 victory over the Cougars, rescuing three points for FLC that appeared in jeopardy just eight seconds earlier.

Colorado Christian (4-5-1 overall, 2-3-1 RMAC) pulled even with the Skyhawks (3-3-2 overall, 2-1-2 RMAC) with 1:02 remaining in regulation, courtesy of gorgeous shot of their own from Brooke Schultz.

But the momentum change was short lived as the ensuing kick-off set the stage for Patron's heroics, putting a bow on a four-point Homecoming weekend for the Skyhawks after they earned a 0-0 tie against No. 9 ranked Colorado School of Mines on Friday.

"Last year, this same weekend, we got zero points," said Fort Lewis head coach Damian Clarke. "Colorado Christian is a good team and difficult to beat. They're athletic and can cause some problems. To win it like that — obviously, I'd have preferred the 1-0 clean sheet — but to only give (the Cougars) eight seconds of joy was nice."

It was a banner afternoon for Patron, who got her Sunday started with a penalty kick goal in the 53rd minute to get the game's scoring underway.

The two goals on Sunday tied Patron's career high, previously set on Oct. 6, 2017 in a 4-1 win over Black Hills State, and were her first two tallies of 2019.

"You have to have a player here and there that can carry the team," Clarke said. "The goalkeepers and some of the players at the back ensured that we got a point last time out. Today, Emma's composure, it forces more belief into the group. I think she's done a very good job of staying unbeaten for two weeks. This week we got better with the ability to take points from the weekend."

The late goal from Schultz was the only blemish on the weekend for the Skyhawks' defense as they turned in another outstanding performance, limiting the Cougars to eight difficult shots on goal as FLC bogged down the middle of the field to limit the quality of chances.

"We're committed to making sure people aren't going to beat us down the middle of the pitch," Clarke said. "If you beat us wide on a cross and a header, these are things that happen in the game, but they're difficult. We're going to make people score in the most difficult ways possible."

In net, Fort Lewis again employed its two goalkeepers as senior Britt Blomso got the start and made one save through the first 45 minutes, while freshman Katherine Dunbabin stopped six of the seven shots she faced in the second half to pick up the win.

"Britt was solid in the first half again and Katie came in and shut the door," Clarke said. "For her to be a freshman and taking on the pressure of these last two games, it's just awesome. Her and Britt are growing into a great competition and they're also supporting each other."

Fort Lewis will look to build off its strong weekend performances as the team prepares for its next challenge; a date with the No. 1 ranked team in the country, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

The Skyhawks and top-ranked Mountain Lions will square off at 5 p.m. Friday out in Colorado Springs.

"I think there's a ton of adversity that we won't know until the ball is kicked off. UCCS has some special players and they obviously have a very strong mindset to dominate right now," Clarke said. "We'll see if we can crack into that in a similar way like we did against Mines."
