Skyhawks break out for season-high 93 points in rout of Northern New Mexico

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team had its offense bust out Saturday evening when it hosted non-conference foe Northern New Mexico College, pouring in a season-high 93 points in a 93-59 rout of the Eagles.

Fort Lewis (3-1 overall) shot a season-best 49% from the field (35-of-71) and racked up 12 made 3-pointers for the second straight game (12-of-25, 48%), while all 13 players who saw the floor on Saturday scored at least two points.

"It was a great win for us, a great win for our program and I'm really happy for the girls," said FLC head women's basketball coach, Orlando Griego. "The 30 assists as a team showed we shared the ball and that's awesome."

The Skyhawks had five players finish in double-figures, led by 14 from junior forward Jordan Carter, who has now scored double-digits in each of the last two games after being hampered by illness the opening weekend of the season.

As a team, FLC has now shot 48% (64-of-134) from the field and a blistering 24-of-52 (46%) from 3-point distance in its last two wins after a sluggish start to the season where the Skyhawks were just 6-of-47 (13%) from beyond the arc.

"That opening weekend we really struggled shooting the ball, but at the same time we're going to continue to shoot the ball," Griego said. "Our girls still have the confidence to shoot the ball and every time they do, we think it's going in. It's a credit to them for sticking with it and getting those shots up."

Senior guard Kaitlyn Romero led the 3-point barrage as the second Skyhawk in double-figures with 12 points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from 3-point distance, three of which came in the first half as the Skyhawks built a 49-23 advantage heading into the break.

"After hitting my first three, I felt really confident and I think our team did a really good job finding the open man (Saturday)," Romero said. "We had a hard week of practice and got up a lot of shots."

FLC created all the separation it'd need with a 31-point second quarter that saw the Skyhawks shoot over 63 percent from the field. Leading the charge was the Skyhawks' bench unit, which outscored the Eagles' reserves, 42-15.

Junior guard Bailey Osmer keyed the run as she scored all nine of her points in the second quarter while adding four rebounds and two assists. The Ottawa University transfer finished the evening with nine points, a career-high nine rebounds, three assists and a team-best Plus/Minus rating of +29.

"Bailey had a great game for us at the high-post against (the Eagles') zone," Griego said. "She did a really good job of either finding people, attacking the basket and keeping the defense honest…Bailey is a utility player. She can shoot from the outside, she can take it inside, she's really aggressive, she rebounds the ball well and she can defend. We knew coming in that we'd plug her into a few different positions to give us a few different looks and she did a great job."

Junior guard Sydney Candelaria and redshirt freshman forward Eve Kulovitz were the other two Skyhawks in double-figures on Saturday with 12 points and 11 points, respectively.
Senior point guard Kayla Herrera-Flores added nine points and tied for the team-high in assists with five, alongside sophomore guard Alyssa Adams.

Fort Lewis will now turn its attention toward the final non-conference game on its schedule; a Tuesday matchup against the University of the Southwest. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Whalen Gymnasium.

"The biggest thing for us is to stay healthy. We have a couple people out right now, so the big thing is for us to stay healthy and keep working on us," Griego said. "(Southwest) will be really similar to what we saw tonight. They're going to be scrappy and have some good athletes on their team. They'll play some man, play some zone. They play a little more man than they do zone, so it'll be nice to see our actually man-to-man offense."
