Skyhawks unable to climb out of early hole in road loss to Black Hills

SPEARFISH, South Dakota — An early hole and a tough night at the charity stripe put the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team behind the 8-ball Saturday night as the team dropped its first RMAC game of the season, 74-66, to Black Hills State University.

Fort Lewis (7-2 overall, 3-1 RMAC) finished its first road trip of 2019-2020 with a split after earning a victory Friday night against South Dakota School of Mines, putting the team in a good position heading into their final game of the fall semester this Saturday at home against Adams State University.

"I'm really pleased with our effort over the weekend. Our girls know we'd have liked a different result than we got tonight, and they're a little down because they worked so hard to get back in the game," said Fort Lewis head coach, Orlando Griego. "It's really important to win on the road in the RMAC. It's a big deal and we're glad we were able to come up here and at least earn a split."

After FLC snared a quick 4-0 advantage, Black Hills State (6-4 overall, 3-2 RMAC) responded with a 20-1 blitz to go up 20-5 with 2:56 remaining in the first quarter.

The Yellow Jackets would maintain that double-digit lead, carrying a 42-31 lead into the half and owning a 60-49 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

Fort Lewis couldn't go away quietly, though, as the Skyhawks, once down by as many as 18 points, climbed back within three at 62-59 with 5:33 remaining when junior forward Chloe Warrington nailed one of her three 3-pointers off the bench.

Warrington finished with nine points and was a big complimentary piece to the interior work done by freshman Jordan Vasquez and junior forward Jordan Carter, each of finished with double-doubles on Saturday.

Vasquez led all Skyhawks with 13 points and 11 rebounds off the bench, while Carter added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Sydney Candelaria was the third Skyhawk in double-figures with 12 points.

"Black Hills' defense was really starting to sag and collapse on (Carter and Vasquez), so it was really important to have a good shooter like Chloe out there to stretch the defense," Griego said. "She did a really good job and part of the reason I think our two Jordans had good games was because of Chloe in the game."

Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, that was the closest they'd be able to inch in the fourth quarter as untimely turnovers and a tough night at the free throw line (10-of-19) led to key empty possessions down the stretch.

"Our girls did a really good job of fighting back to put ourselves in a position to tie the game or make it a one-possession game," Griego said. "We were close, close, close but then we just couldn't get over that hump. We had some possessions that were turnovers when we were in positions to get closer or we missed some free throws."

The Yellow Jackets took advantage of FLC's 16 turnovers, cashing those in for 12 points, and capitalized on their opportunities at the free-throw line, going 22-of-24 (92%), including 12-of-13 in the second half.

"We left nine points at the free throw line. It'd obviously be nice to make every single one, but it couldn't have been a different game if we put some of those in," Griego said. "And the other stat that stood out to us was our turnovers. They scored 12 points off our turnovers. And when you're not taking care of the ball and when you're missing free throws, you're not putting yourself in a good position to win a basketball game."

Up next for the Skyhawks will be a 5:30 p.m. matchup against their travel partner Adams State University on Saturday to close out the fall semester. The Grizzlies will come to Whalen Gymnasium with a 1-9 overall record and 1-3 mark in the RMAC.

"We want to take care of business at home and know that Adams State will come in really hungry," Griego said. "We need to learn from this weekend, get better, and I think we will."
