Carter Tallies 16 Points as Women’s Basketball Fights to the End at Westminster

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Playing the second-best team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team held a lead in the second half and were within two late before Westminster closed the game on a 7-2 run to take the 69-62 victory Saturday.

Jordan Carter tallied 16 points on 8-14 shooting, along with six rebounds and an assist to lead the way for FLC (9-12, 5-10 RMAC). Sydney Candelaria followed up her career-high night Friday with 12 points on 4-9 shooting against the Griffins (16-3, 14-1 RMAC). Westminster held a 36-29 edge on rebounds, while FLC forced 14 turnovers and held a 18-2 advantage on bench points.

Following an opening basket by Westminster, Alyssa Yocky and Carter answered with baskets to give the Skyhawks their first lead at 4-2. The teams traded leads the rest of the opening quarter when a Kaylee Carlsen three-pointer gave the Griffins a 15-11 lead heading into the second quarter.

Carter and the Skyhawks opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run with Carter accounting for six of the points and Candelaria added the other two points during the run that left FLC with a 19-15 lead at the 6:45 mark.

Kayla Herrera helped erase a quick 4-0 run by the Griffins to break the tie when she drilled a three-pointer. The Skyhawks jumped the lead back out to four a couple of times, with the last coming right before halftime when Carter took a pass from MorningRose Tobey and hit the layup for the 33-29 lead at the break.
A Carter jumper nearly two minutes into the third quarter had FLC with their largest lead of five at 36-31. Westminster fought back with a 6-0 run to regain the lead at 37-36. Aubre Fortner and Abigail Jensen hit back-to-back jumpers before a layup Yocky capped a 6-0 run that had the lead back out to five at 42-37.
The Griffins took off over the final minutes of the third quarter going on a 17-5 run to take a 54-47 lead into the final quarter.

The run extended into the fourth quarter as Westminster scored the first four points to move the lead into double-digits. Candelaria hit a layup, then added a pair of free throws, setting up a three-pointer from Tanisha Begay that had the Skyhawks within four at 60-56 with 4:54 to play.

A few minutes later, after Yocky hit her first free throw, then missed the second, Carter collected the offensive rebound that eventually found its way out to Herrera on the wing who sunk a deep three that cut the deficit to two at 62-60 with 2:46 to play.

Westminster answered out of a timeout with a layup inside by Olivia Elliss. She was also fouled, but missed the ensuing foul shot that was brought in by Kaitlin Toluono and the Griffins returned the favor when Carlsen hit a three-pointer off the offensive rebound to push the lead to seven with two minutes to play.

FLC would get no closer than seven the rest of the way with Westminster hanging on for the 69-62 victory.

The Skyhawks went 25-53 (47) from the field, 7-17 (41) from three and 5-9 (56) at the foul line.

Carlsen led four Griffins in double-figures with 24 points. Elliss added 15, Denise Gonzalez with 11 and Toluono chipped in 10. Elliss made it a double-double with 12 rebounds. Westminster went 25-57 (44) from the field, 5-16 (31) from three and 14-17 (82) at the foul line.

The Skyhawks remain three games back of the eighth and final conference tournament spot which is currently occupied by Black Hills State at 8-7.
