Another Strong Second Half Pushes Women’s Basketball Past Dixie State

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team used another big second half Saturday night, this time against Dixie State, as the Skyhawks defeated the Trailblazers 82-75 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action inside Whalen Gym.

FLC (11-14, 7-12 RMAC) scored 24 points in both the third and fourth quarters to outscore Dixie State (13-10, 9-10 RMAC) 48-39 over the final 20 minutes and erase a two-point halftime deficit to claim the win. The Skyhawks dominated the boards outrebounding the Trailblazers 40-28 and it helped on the offensive end, utilizing a 12-4 edge on second-chance points. FLC also played well in the paint holding a 42-36 advantage.

It was also a balanced scoring effort with five reaching double-figures for the Skyhawks led by 21 from Jordan Carter on 9-15 shooting. She also had four rebounds and two steals. Sydney Candelaria added 18 points, with several big baskets down the stretch, along with three rebounds and four assists. Alyssa Yocky posted yet another double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Aubre Fortner went for 12 points and four rebounds, while Kayla Herrera rounded out the five in double-figures with 10 points on 5-6 shooting and had four assists.

Candelaria and Herrera opened the scoring for FLC, putting in a pair of layups over the first two minutes. The Trailblazers answered with an 8-0 run to take an 8-4 lead. The Skyhawks came back with a 6-0 run as Herrera hit a jumper, Fortner added a jumper and Abigail Jensen tallied two from the line to complete the 6-0 run and leave FLC with the 10-8 lead.

Neither team was able to grab more than a two-point lead the rest of the first quarter, with a jumper by MorningRose Tobey near the end of the frame tying the game at 18 heading into the second quarter.

It remained a close second quarter through the first five minutes until a three-pointer by Maile Richardson gave Dixie State a six-point lead. FLC answered back with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 30 with Carter hitting two from the line and then after a Fortner three, Carter added a foul shot to end the run.

Lisa Vancampen closed the half for Dixie State when she converted a three-point-play to give the Trailblazers a 36-34 lead at the break.

It was another close quarter throughout the third, with Dixie State moving out to a 50-46 lead near the midway point. A layup from Yocky and then a three-pointer from Candelaria off a great pass from Tanisha Begay to move FLC out to the 54-52 lead.

FLC had the lead at four a couple of times before a layup by Mariah Martin closed the third with a layup to keep the Skyhawks with a 58-56 lead heading into the final quarter.

A Yocky jumper and layup from Carter opened the scoring in the final frame and had FLC out to a six-point lead. The Skyhawks kept the pressure up with a Candelaria strong layup moving the lead out to seven with 6:22 to play.

A jumper by Fortner had FLC out to their largest lead of the game at 72-61 with 3:27 to play, but Dixie State still had another run left in them.
The Trailblazers used a 14-6 run over the next two minutes to pull back to within three with 1:37 to play. The Skyhawks defense turned up the pressure, coming up with a couple of big stops and on the other end, Yocky sunk four straight foul shots to seal the victory.

FLC shot right at 50 percent making 30-60, while going 4-15 (27) from three and 18-23 (78) at the foul line.

Ali Franks led three in double-figures for Dixie State going for 18 points and seven rebounds, along with six assists. Keslee Stevenson added 17 points and Martin rounded out the players in double-digits with 15. The Trailblazers went 28-58 (48) from the field, 9-24 (38) from three and 10-16 (63) from the foul line.

FLC will hit the road this coming week as they will play at Colorado Mesa on Friday and Western Colorado on Saturday with both games starting at 5:30 p.m.
