Softball Plays Pair of Close Games to Open Cactus Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Fort Lewis College softball team played a pair of games that went right down to the end against Saint Martin's and UT Permian Basin Friday to open the Cactus Classic. The Skyhawks ended up falling by the same scores of 4-3 in both games.

In the first game against Saint Martin's, FLC (4-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead scoring a run in the second and two more in the third. In the second, McKenna Hefley opened the frame reaching on an error. After her sister Kylie Hefley sacrificed her to second with a bunt, Hunter Garcia walked and then a single by Pilar Gutierrez singled to load the bases. After a pop out marked the second out, Cassie Sloan came through with a big two-out single to drive in McKenna Hefley.

Angelique Elemen got FLC on the board in the third inning when she launched a solo home run to make it a 2-0 game. McKenna Hefley followed with a double and later moved to third on a groundout with two outs. Garcia this time delivered the two-out hit as she singled to drive in McKenna Hefley and move the lead to 3-0.

Saint Martin's (3-1) got on the board with a run in the fourth and then took the lead with three runs in the fifth.

The Skyhawks threatened in the fifth when Elemen doubled and McKenna Hefley singled to put runners at the corners with one out. The Saints were able to get out of the jam with a pop out and a strikeout.

FLC held the 8-7 advantage on hits, while there were three errors committed in the game, with the Saints committing two.

Elemen and McKenna Hefley led the Skyhawks with two hits apiece, while Elemen, Garcia and Sloan drove in a run apiece. In the circle, Kassidy Trumbo started and ended up with the loss (1-1) after going 4.1 innings and allowing four earned runs. Emily Morris tossed the final 1.2 innings and didn't allow a run while posting four strikeouts.

Sabrina Hicks, Kylie Lopez and Regan Byrd led the Saints with two hits apiece, while Lopez drove in two runs. In the circle, Lauren Maley started and went the first 2.1 innings and allowed two earned runs. Brandi Schoessler came on in relief and went the final 4.2 innings to get the win (3-0) after allowing just three hits and no runs.

FLC started strong in the second game as well, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning against UT Permian Basin. Taylor Beaman opened the frame with a single and after a pair of outs, Taylor Hollestelle singled and then Elemen came through with the big hit as she doubled to drive in two runs. The Skyhawks cashed in another two-out run when McKenna Hefley singled to score Elemen and move FLC out to the 3-0 lead.

The Falcons answered with two in the home half of the third and then tied the game at three in the fourth.

In the sixth, FLC got a walk from Gutierrez, but she was left stranded and then in the home half, UT Permian Basin plated a run to move in front 4-3. The Skyhawks tried to even the score in the seventh, as they had two runners on base. With one out, Beaman singled and after the second out was recorded, Allison Young singled to put runners and first and second before a pitching change and a groundout to second ended the game leaving the Falcons with the 4-3 victory.

Each team tallied five hits, while FLC committed the only two errors in the game. Beaman led the way with two hits, while Elemen drove in two runs. In the circle, Kelly Decker went all six innings and ended up with the hard-luck loss (0-2) as she allowed three earned runs and tallied five strikeouts.

Jessica Gonzales led UT Permian Basin with two hits and both Courtney Cagle and April Arellano drove in a run. In the circle, Sloan Springfield picked up the win after going 6.2 innings and allowed three earned runs. Abrie Castillo tallied the save after getting the final out in the seventh.

FLC will continue the Cactus Classic on Saturday when they will face Biola at 3 p.m. and St. Mary's at 5:30 p.m. with both times Mountain Standard Time.
