Softball Concludes Cactus Classic Against Biola, St. Mary’s and Simon Fraser

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 TUCSON, Ariz. – The offense was on full display to start the day Saturday as the Fort Lewis College softball team picked up an 11-10 win over Biola at the Cactus Classic. Later in the day, the Skyhawks tallied three runs, but fell short against St. Mary's, 11-3. In the final game of the tournament on Sunday, Simon Fraser made a late rally to tie the game and then win in extra innings, 6-3.

In the game against Biola, FLC (5-8) tallied 13 hits and held off a late push by Biola (3-5) to claim the wild 11-10 victory. Angelique Elemen came out ready to go in the first inning as she launched a two-run homer to score Taylor Hollestelle and give the Skyhawks an early 2-0 lead.

Allison Young stretched the lead to 3-0 in the second when she delivered a two-out RBI singled to plate Hunter Garcia who was hit-by-pitch earlier in the inning.

Biola got on the board with a run in the home half of the second leaving FLC with the 3-1 advantage. It remained 3-1 into the fifth when the Skyhawks got the offensive cooking again. McKenna Hefley walked and then her sister Kylie Hefley doubled to move her to third. McKenna Hefley then scored on a wild pitch for the fourth run of the game. After Pilar Gutierrez walked and stole second, Julia Roberts ripped a double to score both Gutierrez and Kylie Hefley for the 6-1 lead.

Biola answered right back with three in the home half of the fifth to make it a 6-4 contest.

In the sixth, Elemen walked in front of back-to-back singles by McKenna Hefley and Kylie Hefley to load the bases. Following a lineout marked the second out, Garcia walked to bring in a run and after McKenna Hefley scored on a passed ball, Roberts singled in the ninth run of the game. FLC kept the bats going in the inning with Hannah Gondini singling to score Garcia to move FLC out to the 10-4 lead.

Biola got a run closer with one in the home half of the sixth setting up the wild seventh inning.

Hollestelle homered to open the frame, which turned out to be big moving FLC out to the 11-5 lead. In the home half of the inning, Biola scored five runs to pull to within one and had the tying run at first when a fielder's choice groundout ended the game giving FLC the 11-10 victory.

Hollestelle and Roberts each posted three hits to lead the way, while McKenna Hefley and Kylie Hefley added two hits apiece. Roberts drove in three runs and Elemen added two. In the circle, Dana Dwyer started and went the first five innings to collect the win (1-0) after allowing four earned runs. Kassidy Trumbo tossed the final two innings and allowed just two earned runs.

Hailey Boyett, Kiana Meriales and Andi Hormel all had three hits to lead Biola. Meriales drove in three runs. In the circle, Paula Damas went the first two innings and ended up with the loss (2-2) after allowing three earned runs. Kaile Chavez went the next 3.2 innings and allowed seven earned runs and Jennifer Morinishi threw the final 1.1 innings and gave up one earned run.

Against St. Mary's, FLC ended up outhitting the Rattlers 11-10, but St. Mary's was able to take the 11-3 victory. The Rattlers opened the game scoring a run in the first, second and third innings for a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth, Elemen kept the bat going as she opened the frame with a solo homer to center to leave FLC down just two at 3-1.

The Rattlers then scored a run in the fifth, four in the sixth and three more in the seventh to open an 11-1 lead. In their last at-bat, FLC put together a strong run with Roberts opening the frame with a single to third base. Taylor Beaman added a single and then a single from Kaitlyn Barlow loaded the bases. Young kept the inning going when she singled to left to drive in Roberts. After a pitching change, a strikeout was recorded before an Elemen groundout to first brought in Beaman and then a strikeout followed to end the game leaving St. Mary's with the 11-3 win.

Young, Elemen, Kylie Hefley and Beaman all added two hits to lead FLC, while Elemen drove in two runs. In the circle, Kelly Decker went the first 5.2 innings and ended up with the loss (0-4) after allowing seven earned runs. Dwyer then went the final 1.1 innings and allowed three earned runs.

Staci Johns led St. Mary's with three hits and drove in four runs. Jayme Johns and Bari Christian tallied two hits apiece and Jayme Johns drove in two runs. In the circle, Alex McLennan picked up the win after going the first six innings and allowed three earned runs. Rylee Hopper went the final third of an inning.

To close the tournament, FLC went against Simon Fraser as the Skyhawks outhit the Clan 8-5. The Skyhawks were in front 3-1 until the seventh when Simon Fraser rallied with two runs to tie the game and eventually win in extra innings.

Simon Fraser (5-0) struck first in the opening inning as they scored an unearned run for the 1-0 lead.

In the third, FLC plated two runs to grab the lead. Garcia opened the frame with a triple down the left field line and then scored when Roberts doubled to right-center to tie the game. After Roberts moved to third on a passed ball, Gondini grounded out to third which scored Roberts for the 2-1 lead.

FLC went out to a 3-1 lead in the fifth as after Garcia opened the inning with a walk, Gondini and Young singled to load the bases for Hollestelle who singled to first base to bring in Garcia for the 3-1 lead.

It remained 3-1 into the seventh when Simon Fraser rallied to score two runs and tie the game at three. In the eighth, the Clan scored three runs to jump out to a 6-3 lead. The Skyhawks tried to rally in the home half, but three hard hit balls ended up in outs giving Simon Fraser the 6-3 win.

Young and Hollestelle tallied two hits apiece, while Hollestelle, Roberts and Gondini drove in a run apiece. In the circle, Trumbo started and went the first seven innings allowing just one unearned run. Decker tossed the final innings and allowed two earned runs to end up with the loss (0-5).

Annika Lundrigan paced Simon Fraser with two hits and drove in two runs. In the circle, Anissa Zacharczuk went the first 2.1 inning and allowed two earned runs. Kendra Ho went the next 2.2 innings and allowed an earned run before Jessica Fasolino finished off the final three innings and grabbed the win (3-0) after allowing no earned runs.

FLC will return to action this coming Saturday and Sunday when they will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at home against Colorado Mesa with a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday and another doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
