Wittman Paces Men’s Basketball in Final Road Game at Mountaineers

GUNNISON, Colo. – Will Wittman posted a team-best 14 points on 5-10 shooting, while AJ Sparks and Kireed Johnson added 13 points apiece as the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team couldn't overcome a 50 percent shooting night and 12 three-pointers by Western Colorado as the Mountaineers claimed the 82-68 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

In addition to his 14 points, Wittman also grabbed four rebounds, added an assist, a block, two steals and hit three three-pointers. Sparks went 5-8 from the field, along with three rebounds, three assists and two steals for his 13 points and then Johnson went 3-8 from the field, all three-point attempts, along with two assists and a steal in collecting his 13 points. Otas Iyekekpolor and Marquel Beasley tallied nine points apiece, as Iyekekpolor just missed a double-double with 10 rebounds.

Western Colorado (6-21, 3-18 RMAC) opened the scoring just over a minute in with a three-pointer. Beasley answered back with a fastbreak layup and then a foul shot by Iyekekpolor tied the game at three.

Trailing by four, a Wittman long ball and a layup by Sparks pushed the Skyhawks ahead for the first time at 8-7 four minutes in. Another three-pointer by Wittman a minute later kept FLC (12-15, 7-14 RMAC) with the one-point lead when the Mountaineers came back with a 7-0 run to move out to the 17-11 lead.

After falling behind by 13, a pair of three-pointers from Johnson and Iyekekpolor helped bring FLC back to within seven before Western Colorado closed the half outscoring the Skyhawks by three the rest of the half to take a 42-32 lead into the break.

A Sparks three-point-play two minutes into the second half had the deficit back into single digits, bit then a 15-4 run by the Mountaineers followed to put the game out of reach. Alex Semadeni, Sparks and Wittman tallied points down the stretch to close the scoring with Western Colorado taking the 82-68 victory.

FLC went 21-53 (40) from the field, 9-25 (36) from three and 17-22 (77) at the foul line. The Skyhawks held the advantage on second-chance points (8-1), bench points (19-16), were even on points in the paint (24-24) and held the edge on fastbreak points (8-7).

Five Mountaineers scored in double-figures with Brady Subart leading the way with 23 points. Jackson Ehrlin added 16 points and Monroe Porter went for a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Western Colorado went 27-54 (50) from the field, 12-27 (44) from three and 16-24 (67) at the foul line.

The Skyhawks will close out the regular season this coming Friday when they host Adams State inside Whalen Gym for senior night starting at 7:30 p.m.
