Softball Opens RMAC Slate at #22 Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – In what was originally scheduled to be a home opening series for the Fort Lewis College softball team turned into a road Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener as the Skyhawks played at #22 Colorado Mesa and the Mavericks took the opening doubleheader 12-0 and 15-0 both in five innings on Sunday.

With Aspen Field still under several inches of snow, the teams ended up switching sites and the games still count as normal RMAC contests. The Skyhawks played as the home team on the scoreboard in both games.

In the opener, FLC (5-10, 0-2 RMAC) was held to one hit while Colorado Mesa (9-3, 2-0 RMAC) tallied 12 hits, starting the game with five runs in the first inning. The Mavericks kept it going with two more in the third and then five in the fourth to jump out to the 12-0 lead.

The Skyhawks had a tough time trying to get anything going against Kimbri Herring as she kept FLC without a baserunner until the third when Hannah Gondini doubled to left on a 1-2 pitch. Angelique Elemen worked a four-pitch walk in the fourth and then a scoring opportunity showed up in the fifth.

Pilar Gutierrez and Mackenzie Parks worked back-to-back walks before a fly out and strikeout ended the game.

Herring picked up the win (4-1) after tossing five innings for the complete game and allowed just the one hit and three walks, along with nine strikeouts. Brooke Doumer and AnnMarie Torres tallied three hits apiece to lead the Mavericks, while Torres drove in five runs.

Emily Morris took the loss in the circle (2-4) for FLC after tossing the first third of an inning and allowed three earned runs. Kelly Decker went the final 4.2 innings and allowed eight runs (one earned) and added four strikeouts.

The second game had a similar feel with Colorado Mesa starting strong with nine runs in the first and five more in the second to jump out to an early 14-0 lead before taking the 15-0 victory. Paige Adair limited FLC to one hit.

The Skyhawks nearly plated a run in the first when Taylor Hollestelle walked and then stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher. A strikeout followed to end the frame.

In the third, Allison Young reached on a throwing error and then moved to second on a single to center by Elemen. A pop out followed to end the threat. That ended up being the last baserunner for the Skyhawks, as Adair and then McKenzie Surface worked perfect fourth and fifth innings.

Adair worked the first four innings to get the win (3-2) for Colorado Mesa after allowing just a hit and a walk, along with four strikeouts. Surface struck out the three batters she faced in the fifth.

Three Skyhawks pitched in the circle with Kassidy Trumbo starting and ending up with the loss (1-2) after allowing eight earned runs in two-thirds of an inning. Dana Dwyer went the next two-thirds of an inning and allowed five earned runs before Morris went the final 3.2 innings and kept the Mavericks to just one earned run, while striking out four.

Torres led Colorado Mesa with three hits and drove in six.

The two teams will finish their series with another doubleheader on Monday starting at 11 a.m.
