Kylie Hefley Launches Pair of Home Runs Against #22 Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Kylie Hefley caught fire in the fourth game of the series and second game of the doubleheader on Monday as she hit home runs in back-to-back innings to help the Fort Lewis College softball team snap a seven-game scoreless streak against #22 Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks took the opener of the day 8-0 in five innings and despite the strong game from Kylie Hefley in the second game, Colorado Mesa also claimed the fourth and final game of the series 15-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at the CMU Softball Field.

These games were considered home game for the Skyhawks, but the games were moved to Grand Junction due to Aspen Field being unplayable with snow still on the field.

In the opener, FLC (5-12, 0-4 RMAC) collected two hits and Mackenzie Parks made her debut in the circle in the fourth inning as the freshman tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one baserunner and added a strikeout.

#22 Colorado Mesa (11-3, 4-0 RMAC) scored at least a run over the first four innings, plating a run in the first, three in the second, another run in the third and then three in the fourth to jump out to an 8-0 lead.

Dana Dwyer was the first to reach base for the Skyhawks in the second inning when she doubled to left-center but was left stranded there as the next batter popped out. In the fourth, Angelique Elemen ripped a double to right, but a fly out and pop out ended the inning.

Kelly Decker started in the circle for the Skyhawks and went the first 3.1 innings to end up with the loss (0-5) after allowing seven earned runs.

Four Mavericks had two hits in the game in AnnMarie Torres, Kalia Jacobi, Sarah Staudle and Alexandria Dufour, with Jacobi and Bailey Kleespies driving in two runs apiece. In the circle, Kimbri Herring started and worked the first four innings, allowing just two hits to get the win (5-1). Shea Mauser tossed the final inning.

The offense then plated the first runs against Colorado Mesa in the second inning to snap a seven-game scoreless streak in the series. The Mavericks scored the first six runs of the games with three in the first and three in the second and then in the home half of the second, Kylie Hefley drilled a solo homer to start the inning on a 1-1 pitch to leave the Mavericks ahead 6-1 after two.

After Colorado Mesa came back with three runs in the third, Taylor Hollestelle answered with a two-run shot in the third as Allison Young opened the frame with a single before Hollestelle took the first pitch over the left-center field fence for a two-run homer leaving FLC down 9-3. The inning would continue when McKenna Hefley singled and then her sister Kylie Hefley drove her in with a two-run home run to center for her second homer of the game in back-to-back innings leaving the Mavericks ahead 9-5.

Colorado Mesa scored a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and then three in the seventh to close the scoring with the Mavericks winning 15-5. McKenzie Surface came on in relief in the third inning for the Mavericks and allowed just one baserunner in 4.1 innings to get the win (2-0). Paige Adair started and went the first 2.2 innings with the Skyhawks tallying five earned runs off six hits.

Kylie Hefley led the Skyhawks with two hits, while she drove in three runs and Hollestelle added two RBI. In the circle, Kassidy Trumbo started and went the first 1.1 innings giving up six earned runs to end up with the loss (1-3). Emily Morris went the next 2.2 innings and allowed four earned runs, while Parks pitched in her second straight game and allowed four earned runs in three innings.

FLC will now travel to Alamosa this coming weekend to face Adams State with doubleheaders on both Saturday starting at noon and Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
