Elemen Breaks Home Run Record as Softball Opens Dixie State Tournament

ST. George, Utah – Senior Angelique Elemen wasted little time tying and then breaking the program home run record. After hitting a solo home run in the first game to tie the record, Elemen launched a two-run shot in the first inning against MSU-Billings to set the home run record with her 43rd career homer. Despite those heroics, the Fort Lewis College softball team came up just short in both games as Hawaii Pacific took the first game, 6-3, and then MSU Billings rallied to win in eight innings, 8-7, Thursday during the Dixie State Courtyard Classic.

Elemen broke Chelsea Rodriguez's previous career home run record of 42 and is just one short of tying Rodriguez's career RBI record of 147. She also moves into ninth in the RMAC record books for home runs in a career, sitting just one away from tying for sixth and four away from tying for fifth. Elemen is 24 RBI away from tying for 10th in the RMAC record books.

"It's an awesome accomplishment and I'm super stoked about it, but glad to get it out of the way early (in the season) because there's a lot of softball to be played," Elemen said on setting the home run record.

In the first game, Hawaii Pacific (2-5) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a two-out RBI single. After that, the game was delayed for over an hour and a half for a field delay. Out of the break, the Sharks added two more in the third on a two-out, two-run double to right-center for the 3-0 lead.

FLC (3-2) was able to get on the board in the fourth when Elemen took a 2-1 pitch and launched it over the right-center field fence to tie the home run record and leave the Skyhawks down two at 3-1.

The Skyhawks kept coming and tied things up in the fifth on a two-run shot to left-center by Pilar Gutierrez, as she jumped on the first pitch and took it out, scoring Taylor Beaman on the play who singled right before the home run.

Hawaii Pacific broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run double and then on a stolen base, throwing error by the catcher to plate the third run of the inning and move the Sharks out to a 6-3 lead after five.

FLC tried to threaten in the sixth when Taylor Hollestelle singled and later moved to second on a wild pitch but would be left stranded.

Hawaii Pacific held a 9-5 edge on hits, while FLC committed the only error in the game. Five players accounted for the hits for the Skyhawks, while Gutierrez led the way in RBI with two. Tiana Cantero-Kawelo went 3-3 for the Sharks, while Cieana Curran and Emilee Leonard drove in two runs apiece.

In the circle, Emily Morris started and went the first four innings for FLC to end up with the loss (2-1) after allowing four earned runs. Kassidy Trumbo went the final two innings and allowed just one earned run. Alexis Morales tallied the win (1-1) for Hawaii Pacific going five innings and allowing three earned runs. Jordan Curry picked up the save after tossing two scoreless innings.

In game two, Mandy Lorenson worked out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning against MSU Billings (5-2) and allowed just one run. FLC quickly answered in the home half when Elemen set the program record for home runs when she took a 1-0 pitch and sailed it over the right-center field fence for a two-run shot and a 2-1 FLC lead. It was her 43rd career home run and already third homer of the season.

The Skyhawks broke the game open in the third when they plated four runs. Allison Young opened the frame with a walk, then advanced to third on a double to right-center by Hollestelle. Elemen then reached on an error by the center fielder to bring in Young. McKenna Hefley followed with a single up the middle to score Hollestelle and both Elemen and Hefley moved up a base on the throw. After a pitching change, an out was recorded before Kylie Hefley hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Elemen. Mackenzie Parks then closed the frame with an RBI single to right for the 6-1 lead after three.

The Yellow Jackets worked their way back into the game in the fifth as they scored four runs on two hits and two errors to pull to within one at 6-5. MSU Billings tied the game in the sixth, but Morris came on in relief of Kelly Decker and was able to hold the go-ahead run from scoring.

In extra innings, with it being tournament play, the teams place a runner on second to start the inning to speed play up. MSU Billings quickly scored the run after a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third, a single to right-center put the Yellow Jackets ahead 8-7. With two outs, an RBI double down the left field line gave MSU Billings an 8-6 lead entering the home half of the eighth.

FLC also cashed in the runner at second when a throwing error by the shortstop on a ball put in play by Kylie Hefley scored Robyn Hall leaving it a one-run game. With Hefley on second, she moved to third on a groundout by Parks, but was left stranded, as a close play at first on a groundout ended the game giving MSU Billings the 8-7 win.

The Yellow Jackets held an 8-7 edge on hits, while the teams committed nine errors, five by the Skyhawks.

Elemen and Parks had two hits each, with Elemen driving in two runs. In the circle, Lorenson went the first 3.1 innings and allowed just one earned run. Decker tossed the next two innings and allowed three earned runs, while Morris ended up taking the hard-luck loss (2-2) allowing one earned run in 2.2 innings.

Brittanee Fisher and Allie Hughes paced MSU Billings with two hits each, while Hughes and Hailee Gregerson drove in two runs apiece. In the circle, Alyssa Etheridge went the first two innings and allowed three earned runs, while Haley Couch came on in relief to get the win (1-1) after allowing just one unearned runs in six innings.

The Skyhawks will continue with the Dixie State Courtyard Classic tomorrow (Friday) when they face a pair of Washington teams in Central Washington at 10 a.m. and Western Washington at 3 p.m. Live stats will be available for both, while video will be available for the Western Washington game.
